I'm outta music... Tell me what I should search for right now to listen to while I sew:
[More:]
Things I've alredy listened to: The Killers, The Decemberists; The White Stripes; Interpol; Low Millions; The Redwalls; Louis XIV; The Flaming Lips; Primitive Radio Gods; and some Frank Sinatra.
Just sayin's all.

I think Ozomatli would make good seamstressing. Or, the Orbital Brown Album, if you're that way inclined.

Six Organs of Admittance.

Or THEME DE YOYO!

Vashti Bunyan seems like perfect sewing music to me, especially if you sit on a moor while you do it. Emily Bezar would be a great choice as well. Also Magnetic Fields, esp. 69 Love Songs, but some of those songs will make you laugh so hard you might lose a stitch, so proceed with caution. And I just like living life in general to T Rex. Let's not forget the classics!

If you dug the Killers and Louis XIV you might enjoy the Kaiser Chiefs. They're another high energy rock pop band with radio friendly punk guitars. I'm also big on the new Hot Hot Heat and Spoon albums. I can see all of those bands being part of that whole sewing scene.

The New Pornographers.

What are you sewing?

Magnetic Fields wins, but I'm booking marking Emily and Ozomatli for next time.

*laughs* - I actually own Kaiser Chiefs, and have played them so nonstop in my car for a month that I'm now somewhat sick of them. So your suggestion is right on target. I'll check out Hot Hot Heat and Spoon, however.

What are you sewing?

Uh. Well. Garb. i.e. Medieval Clothing. Right now I'm making about four pair of viking style pants.

photo that may or may not provide a partial explanation

*hugs Metachat*

I love you guys.

Boris & Merzbow's Megatone is quite pleasant.

If I post a good size list, there's more of a chance I'll hit the nail on the head:

Sufjan Stevens. Iron & Wine. Built to Spill. Neutral Milk Hotel. The Kinks. Neil Young/Crazy Horse (sorry, this may not be appropriate, but I couldn't help myself). Sonic Youth circa "Sister." The Thrills. Wilco. Yo La Tengo.

Grateful Dead. You won't be sorry.

I'm currently listening to the album Londinium, by Archive. It's one of my all-time faves and I recommend it for any activity including (but not limited to) sewing.

MeFi's own The Harvey Girls. I especially like this track.

Backing up current suggestions: Spoooooooooon!! I like them. A lot, but let them grow on you. "Girls Can Tell", "Kill The Moonlight" and "Gimme Fiction", specifically. Iron & Wine, too. (They come highly recommended by michelob if I remember correctly.)

Also: Godspeed You! Black Emperor - "lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven" & "yanqui u.x.o."

Happy sewing! I'll be doing the same thing in a few minutes. Except not SCA gear. Just drapes. I'm pedestrian that way.

(I cannot wait until I get my desktop back on the internet and can play mix-up with you guys. I'm experiencing some serious dj exchange envy right now. That big smudge in the middle of your screen when you open up the mix-up thread? That's a Frisbee nose pressed up against my monitor. *sigh*)

Jean-Luc Ponty.

I can't say I've ever listened to him in a sewing-type context, but that could be because I found out about him through stoner friends who stumbled on "Enigmatic Ocean" in a thrift store.

Things I often listen to while sewing: old Sonic Youth, Sleater-Kinney, the Unicorns, and David Bowie-- energetic stuff, since I need to keep alert or I'll mess something up.

Husky Rescue. Toots and the Maytals. Dave Godin's Deep Soul (collection). Mississippi John Hurt. ACDC's Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Blondie's Parallel Lines. The Frogs. Dwight Yoakam (particularly that acoustic album). Duke Ellington and John Coltrane. Annie Ross sings a song with Gerry Mulligan. Paganini caprices (perf. by Shlomo Mintz). Mando Diao.

When I'm doing historical sewing I tend to go for Dead Can Dance, Loreena McKennitt, that sort of thing. Stuff with a sort of historical "feel" to it.
And if I'm making stuff to go dancing in, I tend to go more towards Front 242, Skinny Puppy, etc. Fast stuff since I'm usually trimming the last threads off my latest creation as I grab my keys and head for the door, and need to feel rushed.

I don't know if any of that is your cup of tea, though.

Thanks, dear dobbs. Please, anastasiav, do feel free to sew to us -- we'd like that lots.
