28 June 2005

WARNING: Gratuitous self post pictures inside[More:]
I did it. On January 1, 2005, I looked something like this. I had high blood pressure, weighed 236 lb., wore a 40 inch waist, took seven pills a day, and snored.

So I got on the South Beach Diet. I set a goal of 170 lb., which is in the middle of the range for Healthy for someone 6'-2" on the Body Mass Index charts. As of this morning, I weigh 170 pounds!! So now I look like this.

Here is the record of my weight loss.
Just sayin'...

Okay, so it's only links to pictures. I'll probably catch less crap that way anyway. But dodgy/taz- when I try to use "img src" tags and the url is longer than the line in the box, it tries to insert a <br> in the middle of the "img src" tag when I hit the post button, which is an illegal operation.

nice work dude

re:img tags. they aren't allowed in posts, but they are in comments.

Congrats, Doohickie! It must've taken great discipline to lose over 60 pounds. That's an impressive accomplishment.

Congrats! I started the SBD yesterday, and your post is very inspiring. Nice work.

From someone who lost nearly as much weight, albeit by different methods, you have my sincere congratulations.

Nice work. No wonder you balked when I tried to cover you with butter that one time.

dodgygeezer- If you notice, the "more inside" bit is actually a comment. I tried to post the images in a comment when I figured out images were bad in original posts.

maryh: if you have any questions, email me and I'll try to answer them. There is a lot information I learned in terms of "little things" that weren't in the book that I had to figure out for myself (for instance, especially in Phase I, if you get woozy, DON'T assume you're sugar starved and grab a carby snack. Drink some water instead; chances are you're dehydrated.)

I don't think there is anything magic about South Beach; just like any other diet, it's centered around eating less (a friend who's also on it said its about 1300-1500 calories a day in the meal plans). But it gave me the structure I needed to be able to say NO when confronted with excess or bad foods, and because the favored foods are "slow burning", you don't get the same hunger pangs after a while.

Oh... I forgot the "after" stats:

blood pressure- before: 130/90 (with medication); after: 104/68 (getting weaned from medication)
waist- before: 40 inches; after: about 32-33
pills- before: 7/day; after: 2/day, and getting weaned off one of them. (The last pill is an aspirin for the heck of it.)

Go Doohickie! That is just awesome. And you look great. Although I think you were quite handsome "before" as well. :)

Along similar lines, if you need more inspiration, you should check out this link . I never cease to be amazed by what that guy has been able to do. These profile pictures are especially amazing.

Thanks Doohickie, I appreciate the offer. I feel the same way about South Beach-- getting out of a rut of eating unhealthy stuff is more important than expecting a magic pill. And SBD sounds a lot more rational, and sustainable, than Atkins. I haven't read the book, so I've mostly been using web recources (this one is good, in case anyone is interested. As is the World's Healthiest Food site that was posted on MeFi a few days back.)

Congratulations, looking good.

Congratulations Doohickie!

And especially on the last month or six weeks of loss which looks like it might have been a struggle with some reversal. You're an inspiration.

[seriously, it was your mad bopping to cheesy supertramp that did it, right?]

Point taken. Let me guess - you're using my nemesis, Internet Explorer.

Congrats! In an alternate universe where I was not such a lazy cupcake-slamming slob, I could dream of posting something similar.

dodgy: sadly, you are correct.
posted by Doohickie 28 June | 21:26
quonsar: I will treasure you post always.

matildaben: Buy the book, and read it through to the beginning of the meal plans. Then, you will be able to do likewise. Seriously.

(I had never every dieted seriously before)

Kick ass, especially with the blood pressure thing - it's important when losing weight that the less visible numbers get dealt with too.
posted by invitapriore 28 June | 22:14
I coulda swore I posted in this thread earlier - I said "Very inspirational Doohickie!" and "Congrats".
