Y'all are awful. But I laughed. I only hope it's true.

I am surprised mathowie deleted the thread on MeFi. There have been worse "newsfilter" threads left to fester alone.

Parents! It's now safe to send your kids to Neverland!

It's hard to be surprised. It's California, he's wealthy, he's a celebrity.

Hmph. There's a new thread now.

It wasn't until I heard the verdict read that I realized that I was hoping he would be convicted and that really, really bothers me. I'm not a juror and I barely followed the case but for some reason I decided he was guilty. Unfortunately, I think my feelings have more to do with my own prejudices and the fact that he's a bit of a freak than with any hard evidence.

I think I'll keep the TV turned off for a while.

Yeah, but that was a post informing us only that a verdict was to be announced...

well, he let the 9/11 thread stand even though the towers hadn't fallen yet.
posted by quonsar 13 June | 17:38
True, Specklet, and I asked if that was the case in the second thread, but I doubt I'll be answered.

And putting aside that he already looks weird, MJ really didn't look well.

he's so guilty...i'd ask why is it that every single rich and famous celeb gets off, but i know the answer. :

Don't be so hard on yourself - I haven't followed this case either but I do remember that Jackson paid $20 million to the family of child he was alleged to have molested and raped in 1993.

After the payment, the child would not testify and the case collapsed.

California later changed its laws so that victim of such crimes could be compelled to testify.

Actually, I think that's mostly what is coloring my feelings on this case. My knee-jerk reaction to the settlement was "he's guilty" and it made me think he must have automatically guilty this time around, and that bothers me a bit.

Mostly I just really really hope that the jurors are right and he is innocent. For the kid's sake.
posted by LeeJay 13 June | 18:27
Surprise, surprise. Did any one really think he would be convicted, regardless of how guilty he is? As with everything, money can buy innocence.
posted by dg 13 June | 19:05
Just think of all the innocent millionaires on death row.
posted by warbaby 13 June | 20:09
I totally thought he was guilty also, though it's unclear to me if they proved it, well, I guess they didn't.

Bet you still wouldn't let any kid of yours within ten miles of him, and I wouldn't blame you. Look, based on the evidence I've seen and the character of the witness, I probably would've voted to acquit, too, but if it surfaces someday that he is actually a kiddie diddler, I wouldn't be one bit surprised.

Well, I wouldn't let them sleep in his bed that's for sure. But then, I wouldn't have let them sleep in his bed in the first place. I wonder if these parents would have been as happy to have their kids hang around with that creepy grey guy who lives down the road? You know the one - he is always grabbing his crotch, he sounds like a girl and made his house look like a theme park. Just because someone is rich and famous, why do people think that makes their eccentricities harmless?

I mean, really, what sort of parent lets their kids sleep with a 40 year-old man under any cicumstances? Stupid people are breeding, indeed.

greedy ones.
posted by quonsar 13 June | 22:49
Exactly.
posted by dg 13 June | 23:03
Let's face it, if Michael Jackson the mailman went around telling anyone who'd listen that he slept with children, we all know Michael Jackson the mailman would soon end up in prison having his skull hammered into the floor. Maybe that's not fair but it can't be right that the rich and famous get differnt treatment in court to the rest of us.
posted by dodgygeezer 14 June | 03:10
the difference is the rich can afford lawyers who know how to use the system

predators prey on the weak, they pick their victims, those most in need of attention, etc., and he follows the textbook down to the "Diff'rent Strokes" special episode.
Place blame where you want but will he get away with it again? probably.
Will there be someone on his case (as in a worker)?
not while babies are covered with maggots instead of blankets.
Socialism works as much on bribery as consumerism does on neglect.

I don't believe "Diff'rent Strokes" was, strictly speaking, a textbook.
posted by buttes 14 June | 08:03
It takes quite a parent to fish for MJ's millions with her own child as a lure.

Some days they're biting, some days they ain't. There's a couple biguns in this here lake. You're liable to lose a perfectly good lure going after them, though.

That's the way the line breaks, son. Try a minnow next time.
