Metachat Mix-up! The files are all in and everyone who uploaded a mix should now have received an e-mail with more details on downloading. If you haven't submitted a mix, then sorry but you're too late. You can use this thread to discuss the mixes as well as posting tracklistings or mix descriptions.
I stand by this description.

There is a tracklist here if you want to check it out before downloading.

mine's almost depressing, but still catchy.
posted by puke & cry 13 June | 15:15
Most importantly a big round of applause to iconomy, arse_hat, Capn, mlis, seanyboy, omiewise and matteo who have all generously sponsored this swap. They are now allowed to adopt any title they want for the next month - Lord, Emperor, Tyrant - and we must use it whenever in their presence while bowing our heads and tugging our forelocks. It's the rules.

Thanks guys.
posted by dodgygeezer 13 June | 15:18
actually, what happened to seanyboy's mix?
posted by dodgygeezer 13 June | 15:24
Apollo 440 - Liquid Cool (Deep Forest Ice Cold @ The Equator Mix)
Bassheads - Is There Anybody Out There? (Original Mix)
Vernon - Vernon's Wonderland (Laurent Garnier's Wake Up Mix)
Union Jack - Two Full Moons And A Trout
The Age of Love - The Age of Love (Watch Out For Stella Mix)
Hardfloor - AM-Trip
The Orb - Backside of the Moon (Tranquiliity Lunar Orbit)/Into the Fourth Dimension (Essenes in Starlight)

Mine's early 90s electronica remixes - if you're interested in that sort of thing - and also catchy ;)

1.8 gig's gonna take a while, tho, even at work.

posted by matildaben 13 June | 15:43
I am at work and hence don't have my track list, but I'll say that my mix was inspired by the tapes I used to make for guys I had crushes on in middle school. I was gonna call it "All the Indie kids make out to this tape," but its new name is "I am Lost in the Desert of your Mind" (emo enough?). I forgot to mention in the .txt liner notes that the cover art was shamelessly stolen from www.explodingdog.com.

P.S. Boymilo's track 11 appears to be "How Soon Is Now?" - I think WinZip choked on the question mark - anyway, if it's the album version I'm sure everyone has it already and can just pop it in place. However, if it's some kind of bootleg or cover track he'll have to let us have it.

I'm listening to amberglow's right now and while it may be a bit more MOR than some of us weirdos' stuff, it's a lot of stuff I haven't heard or else haven't heard for a long time, mostly stuff from the 80's, so it gets retro cred and definitely will get played at the appropriate place and time. Although the dude hasn't heard the Arcade Fire yet, someone get him a copy of Funeral quick!

OK, now I feel really boring and mainstream. I just managed to get mine uploaded after struggling to find the time to put it together and then get it uploaded. Believe it or not, the power went out four times last night when I was trying to upload the file. I didn't have time to re-encode tracks at a lower bitrate thatn the 320 that most of them are, so had to compromise between play length and file size. For what it's worth, here they are:

ANIMALIA
1. Pigs on the wing (part 1) [Pink Floyd]
2. The mule [Deep Purple]
3. Psycho chicken [The Fools]
4. Weasels ripped my flesh [Frank Zappa]
5. Cows with guns [Dana Lyon]
6. Black dog [Led Zeppelin]
7. Dead skunk in the middle of the road [Johny Burnette]
8. Several species of small furry animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a pict [Pink Floyd]
9. Wild horses [Rolling Stones]
10. Paper tiger [Spoon]
11. Zebra [John Butler Trio]

I've got all the downloads now (I'm home sick again today, nothing else to do), and I can make Azureus torrents of them all and seed them. I'll send them to everyone that was on the announce email. If anyone not on that list wants them, email me.

send them to me and i'll seed too, matilda. (and thanks for turning me on to bands i didn't know==actually every mix so far is doing that==thanks all!)

dame's is wonderful too--i didn't know new-new-wave/electro/whatever was that good! (and that Slade song!!!!--we were dancing to that and Gary Glitter's Rock n Roll at almost every sweet sixteen one year--that, and Michael Jackson's Off the Wall, believe it or not)

These tracklists are fuggin' fantastic. I'm downloading right now, and am honestly really excited.

I can see (1) or (2) peers for most of my torrents, so that must be Amberglow and Schyler. The rest of you should have the torrent files in your email, so if you use them, please keep Azureus open as you download to spread the weight around.

I have a feeling that by the time all the requirements for Azureus have been compiled, I'll be done downloading everything conventionally.

4 - The Hanging Garden (Live) - Concert The Cure Live - The Cure

I started reading this and thought, "holy shit! Someone put the Necks on their mix!"
posted by kenko 13 June | 20:55
No sweat, matildaben - I started out with all sorts of lofty ambitions of creating something deep and meaningful when I gathered tracks together - then I saw Psycho Chicken in the list and that was the end of that!

Swaps like this make me aware of how narrow my muscial taste really is - I have not even heard of at least half the artists in these tracklists. Which is kind of the point, I suppose.

posted by arse_hat 13 June | 22:58
Meh, had not much luck with torrents in the past. I may have a look tonight and give it a go, but my experience has been that they are more trouble than they are worth.

arse_hat, an expert is merely someone who has one piece of information that the rest of the herd doesn't.

kenko: Wonderwall - Radiohead

Really?

No, not really. It's a pisstake, it's only about half the song, and ends with Thom saying something on the order of "That's enough of that". Fun fact: it was recorded about a mile from where I sit right this minute, at the CBC Studios in Vancouver. [/RH trivia nerd]

I was a bit intimidated by the whole Mefi swap thing, and was a little concerned that I couldn't compete in the coolness/obscurity arena, but after reading the playlists I realise that this wouldnt' have been a problem, and I was silly to worry... I know it's early to be talking about doing this again soon, but the whole project seems to have been very sucessful; so perhaps next time?

Got to work 40 minutes late because I was trying to free up enough space to get everyone on.

I'll upload a different version later on today. I can't do it now because (for some reason) large FTP uploads kill my internet connection and it pisses my customers off.

seanyboy, the first two times I d/led it, when I clicked on it I got a 'corrupted file' error, but I was d/ling other zips at the same time. I waited until they were done, and d/led it alone, and it opened and extracted fine.
