New anti-rape device causing uproar in South Africa.

I wonder if there's a version being developed for men?

How does one go about finding a Pizza Hut that is an actual Pizza Hut and not one of those KFC/TacoBell/PizzaHut express jobs?

weird that they feel it 'must be banned', though. I mean, I think it's pretty disturbing and would certainly never wear one, but... well, I guess it could conceivably be used as a weapon against innocent men, so that even in cases where it was 'legitimate' there could be a whole fuss of 'the bitch seduced me', etc. And really, to wear a device inside your vagina every day on the off chance that you'll be a victim does bely an unhealthy obsession with the possibility of being raped. Probably it would be better not to have it on the market at all...

pinhead would be proud.
A tampon that draws blood at both ends. Who woulda thought it?

There was a big ole thread about a *fictional* anti-rape device (the purpose of the "product" was to make a statement, not to be used realistically) but I can't look it up because MetaFilter's got the jruns.

AlexReynolds, why would males need a version of this?

so they wouldn't get raped in the ass by teh rampaging gays. duh!
Got it.

Is this for real, because it seems questionably effective at best. Outside of ethical, societal considerations, what about the basic application of logic and practicality? It sounds like a one shot wonder, not unlike a bear trap, that once sprung is no longer a threat.

Especially in the case of a gang rape situation, where the presence of several men would make it easy to restrain a woman, what would prevent the aggressor/s from initially inserting some other phallus for the device to latch on to, discard it and then rape the woman? It seems that would have been taken into account, but I don't see it addressed in the article.

And after it became common knowledge of the device spread, wouldn't the assault switch from vaginal to anal? (No pun intended.) What about when women are on their periods? No women in Africa get to wear tampons again at the risk of rape?

On preview: Okay, I stepped away for a phone interview before I could post this. I imagine that my points are redundant to Specklet's link.

The people pushing a ban sound like a bunch of rapists to me. Who cares? Why is this the governments's decision whether a woman get to use this? On the other hand, any woman who uses this and actually does get raped should be prepared to be beaten to death or whatever. Any thug callous enough to rape a woman is more than capable of inflicting great harm to her when attacked by this device, especially if the research that rape is really all about power not sex is really true. Also, what if it catches something inside on the way to grabbing the wang? Ouch!

Just great. Now hot dogs are going to be banned under the DMCA as security circumvention devices.

Damnit, I like weiners.

Actually, this is not an anti-rape device at all - it metes out instant and horrible (but somehow apropos) punishment to someone after they have carried out the act, albeit briefly, but doesn't really prevent it unless you could be sure that every woman was wearing one. Even then, a gun to the head and a demand to remove the device will negate its effectiveness somewhat.

It just seems like an excellent way to escalate the violence that is perpetrated, rather than any kind of deterrent.

It says in the article that the device can't be removed without medical intervention. And it does seem that the man will be in such agony that he won't be able to further harm his victim - if he's acting alone, that is.

Women would be better off taking self-defense training than wearing one of these.
