MetaChat Music Swap Questions about doing the CD cover. What's the best format to save it in? Will it print out the exact same size I make it on all printers, or should I make it a pdf for more uniform printing? Will a pdf take up a lot more space at Loadstream than, say, a jpeg?
A jpeg will print differently on different printers, unless you specify the size. That's because jpeg doesn't specify size, just number of pixels, meaning that a 400 x 400 image printed at 400dpi will be a one inch square, but the same image printed at 200 dpi will be a 2 inch square.

I've gone for a PDF. I used CutePDF which seemed to work OK and most importantly it's free.

Damn, I was just planning on exporting my covers as jpegs. Since it prints the same size at home and on my work printer I just assumed it was universal. Oh, I have much to learn. Next I have to figure out how to convert files to MP3, since I've always just converted my audio files to Winamp media files when making mixes on the computer. Fucked up graphics, incompatible audio files, never zipped a file before....I felt so computer savvy until a few hours ago.

Well, hold on a sec. Jpegs being unsized doesn't mean they necessarily print out different sizes, it just means that unless you specify the size in your printer settings, they might be different sizes. If, when you print, you select "print to specific size" (or whatever the option is called), you can pick how big or small it prints to. So just make sure that whoever prints it knows they have to specify the print size.

BTW, the thread about the music swap will drop off the front page tomorrow however it's still linked in the box on the top right corner of the homepage.

I already did jpegs so that's that.

I'm willing to let people resize my jpeg to their heart's content, because that is what they get! :)

I didn't mean to discourage anybody. It's just that I don't know much about printing and the different graphic formats and all, and I thought I might learn something. Which I did. Thanks!

don't worry, you didn't discourage me, i just don't have any good ideas for cover art. i'll try to come up with something tho. I scanned in some ukiyo-e for the one mofi mix i was in, maybe i'll do that again.

Try this - it's free and it works - what more can you ask for?

.pdf would be best for cover art if you want it to come out the right size without problems, I think. I won't have cover art done before the deadline, I don't think, but will distribute it somehow after the event. Not being able to do this stuff at work has had a greater impact on me than I espected it would :-(

I've encounted a weird little thing - can anyone help? I had to reformat my hd last week (yeah, again) and now I can't do two things I could do before - drag and drop mp3 files into winamp (which I could before), or drag and move (rearrange is a better way to put it) any files in any folder. I know there's some setting somewhere I have to change but I don't know where to look for it - winxp. Can anyone help? This is really annoying...I typed up the cd list and made a cover with the songs in a certain order, and now I can't get them into that order...weirdest thing.
