That's a huge shocker. I'm really surprised. Really. In other news, my Catholic friend (male) made out with some guys at a party a few weeks ago and got strep from one of them. I'd like to think it was divine retribution.
On the same gay-marriage topic, here's a short video I made (self link, but it's on ifilm) last March, documenting the marriages in Multnomah County, back when they were legal for a while. As false as some might say these unions are, they're damn beautiful to see.

His church will never ever be forced to perform them, so it's kinda a meaningless statement (except politically--what are the EU's plans for same-sex marriage?)
pity. ours is really good. we buy stuff for orphans and pay for people with cancer to not die so quickly. unfortunately no-one wants to head it, so on friday we have a vote where everyone is a candidate. which should be interesting - hope i won't be elected, although i suppose i'm not supposed to say such things. we have a good relationship with the management too.
curiously, even the communists here are catholic. when the president of the PC was ill with cancer they had masses to pray for her. which struck me as kind of odd.
amberglow: Spain's government has no problem with same-sex unions.
While the Pope's statement could be seen as a heads-up for Roman Catholics in general of how the new Papacy will stay within standard, it's more likely a message to the Greek and Russian Orthodoxies that Rome has no wish of hiding in the wake of Jean Paul II. There's a lot of mixed feelings between the three factions, mostly dealing with history.
JPII attempted to ease relations, though how much further the Vatican will follow through is anyone's guess. It's likely, though, the Synods won't be disturbed by it, as they're very conservative in their own rights.
the only exposure i've had of unions is from a worldwide shipping company. And it basically kept incompetent people from being fired and set the lowest standard possible for the amount of work one had to do.

Thank God for Unions.
Smart, the individual countries are one thing--but is there anything EU-wide being planned?
/from a Union family--ma, pa, grandpa, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. Ate Union thanksgiving turkey and much much more when i was little and my mother was on strike for a (kinda long) while.
