MetaChat is an informal place for MeFites to touch base and post, discuss and
chatter about topics that may not belong on MetaFilter. Questions? Check the FAQ. Please note: This is important.
Raises an interesting question, though--not to derail, but since there's not a lot of comments right now--why is this a MetaChat post, as opposed to a MeFi one? ("MeCha"?)
I'm not saying it _should_ be on MeFi instead, but there's definitely an interesting tension arising. Sure, maybe MeFi was JRunned out when you went to post it there, but there's no reason a post like this couldn't wait an hour or so, right?
Was there something qualitative about it that you though made it better suited for here? Like maybe it was more intimate, and you thought it was better suited for a smaller audience?
Again, I'm not criticizing your choice, but I'm just curious.
You raise an interesting point that had occurred to me. Short answer is I don't have a blog and I like to share nice things; that and I'd already posted to MeFi (although that 24 hour time's probably up).
I don't know that there's any particular culture slotted to manifest here, save for the detensioning during MeFi outages. And I guess I like the wide range of things -- I do also like superfluous posts from time to time -- but if this site is going to be an actual active site outside of MeFi downtime then I think it should probably have a wide cross section of posts such that people feel like coming back on some sort of regular basis. There's also the traffic created if people filch from here and cite Metachat when they post things elsewhere. And I suppose lastly and leastly, I wonder sometimes about the idea of posting photo sites to MeFi. They don't generate much conversation an are always subjective......but then again I suppose I've probably answered that thought above.
heh..I like MeCha.
I wondered the same thing - not that I see MetaChat as some kind of second-string MetaFilter where you dump all the crap that you just have to share but that you know would get you flamed on MeFi, but my impression is that sites such as this one are well-received there, although they usually get few comments. MeFi is supposed to be all about the links after all, the discussion is secondary.
No, let this be somewhere that not_only_crap gets shared. I guess that was in my head. I find more than a few (what I think are) interesting thingies most days.
You're right about the conversation although it's still hard not to feel some resonance when the comments page stays silent. *sigh*
Anyone who wants to post something to the blue that I post here - go right ahead.

Yeah, that's the intriguing aspect of this whole thing. There's already a couple of different "MeFi overflow" forums, like #mefi and MoFi. On the other hand, this place definitely seems to have its own raison d'etre, separate from those, even when MeFi's up and running. So what's the deal?
I'm really not criticizing this place. After all, I'm participating here, too. I'm just intrigued--it seems to be an interesting window into the basic assumptions a lot of core MeFis share.
Looking for a mission statement LairBob? If so, I guess it gets written as we go (unless taz wants to give anymore outline? - or this just might be an indication in itself that I haven't looked around for statements of purpose &c). MoFi is oooookkk but a bit giggly at times. I've avoided the #MeFi-chat thing so far.
We don't have a profound mission statement. It was propelled by the idea of having someplace for mefites to touch base with each other when the site was down, or when they wanted to be a little less constrained in terms of playfulness and chatter.
We figured it would sort of form its own personality, and if that personality turned out to be nasty or depressing... Well, at least it would have been worth the effort to give it a shot.
I really like how it's developing, though. I think it's nice to have another place to post links in maybe a more informal atmosphere if you feel like it, or post lighter/sillier things, or ask questions that you shouldn't ask on AskMe, etc. It seems to be turning out to be a pretty fun, interesting place.
