Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, Pancake day, or even Paczki day. Saw a video today of people lining up to buy Paczki (pronounced poon-ski) and they talked with a family from India and a woman from China and a couple from the Middle East. Bakeries here make tens of thousands of them this time every year and these people waiting had no idea what it was about until this week.

The Catholic church gave us Shrove Tuesday and that begat Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday in some places and Pancake day in others and here where I live it is known by it's Polish name Paczki day.
A Paczki is a type of jelly donut at about 600 calories and 25 grams of fat. When I moved here I had never heard of it but I had to get in line to buy some. 21 years later other newcomers did the same. There is something kind of great about a bunch of people from different places and different languages and different religions finding community in something that started out as something else. Even if that sense of community is stuffing your face with sweetness.
