23 December 2021

Christmases past I posted covers of Joni Mitchell's River. Here is the first official video for the song released today. Lovely b&w watercolour animation with a hint of colour at the end. Joni Mitchell - River
It's 50 years since Blue was released, and the NYT published this wonderful article about the album, speaking to 25 artists about their experiences of the album - including Graham Nash, who is the 'baby' referred to in River.

The link is here - it should be viewable without a paywall, as it's a 'gift' link (I get 10 links a month I can share from my NYT account). It's a really interesting article, worth an hour of your time.

Thanks for the link Senyar. That is some good stuff.

I was IMing with a friend a few days before Christmas and Joni's This Flight came up. I was flying to a *sigh* trade show in Vegas many years ago and we were to touch down @ 16 minutes after sunset. As we approached the city the ground was dark but the mountains in the distance were still in sun light. Vegas shined like a Christmas tree in the desert darkness and I put on my headphones and listened to the cover of This Flight from Nazareth. A good travel memory.

It is still amazing to me that a Scottish hard rock band cover of Joni Mitchell could be so different and so good.

Yes, like the CSN&Y version of Woodstock, which I much prefer to Joni's. To be honest, I prefer her albums from the period Court & Spark to Hejira, as I find her high soprano on her earlier recordings a bit shrill.
