Midnight in Chernobyl and
Chernobyl Prayer: A Chronicle of the Future aka
Voices from Chernobyl: The Oral History of the Nuclear Disaster. Midnight is a look at the details of the reactor failure, and a look at how the Soviet leadership handled things. It's good if you want more detail.
Chernobyl Prayer is about how the disaster has affected people since 1986. It is in their own words. It is devastating. The story of Lyudmila and Vasily is terrible in the show but even more difficult to read in Lyudmila's own words. What came next for her is sad too.
If you want to know more about the aftermath then Chernobyl Prayer is worth reading but it is tough reading.
