So I went to the Leon Bridges concert last night. [More:] I don't know how popular this guy really is. I pay more attention to him than I normally would, because he is from this area, the south side of Fort Worth. But he's got a contract with Columbia Records so he must be good, right?

If you're not familiar with him, the link goes to a profile of his music. There are two links that are broken in the article, you can see the songs here and here.

It was the first concert I've been to in ages. It was fun. The warmup band was John Batiste and Stay Human, the house band on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. They played about 4 songs over an hour's time; they sure like to jam and it was great.
Stay Human in one of their jams. Yes, that's a tuba on the right.

I really like "Brown Skin Girl" . Great voice and delivery.

I sure loved his first record - the old-school R&B vibe (along with his voice, and his one backup singer? WOW) really appealed to me.

He took a long time to record a follow up - and to some extent I don't care for it as much - it just sounds to me like regular 90's style R&B (which isn't so much my thing!).

Having said all that, he's been pretty clear that he wanted to allow his music to evolve and I definitely don't expect artists to release the same record over and over (unless they want to - I'm looking at you, later ZZ Top and later AC/DC) so more power to Leon for doing his thing!

And it's been really interesting - I keep seeing/hearing songs from Coming Home (the first record) popping up in movies and tv shows. Someone's definitely noticing his work!

He grew up about 5 miles from me.
