The scent of fresh cut pines I've always liked pine scent until I had an odd thought...[More:]
What if the scent is something akin to being able to "smell fear" in the trees as they send out alarm signals to their kin.

Why else would the scent be as distinctive? Either the chain saws are here or the pine borers are attacking!

Too much anthropomorphizing on my part but I'm going off the end with the election cycle craziness....

Send help.
That is almost what the scent of cut grass is, like a screeching pain alarm. I've always been bothered by the smell, which now seems fitting.

I remember reading something probably 40 years ago or more that's always stuck with me. It was about how few seeds become full-grown trees and was something along the lines of "if we could hear the struggle to survive, the sounds of the forest would be deafening."
