Running! [More:]Hello you guys, it has been a while and I was never the most active poster but I do look in from time to time.

I come here because there's something I don't want to tell my friends and family - I've become a runner! And I am loving it! Started Couch to 5K six weeks ago, and have stuck with it, and I'm really slow but I can kind of do it. And I'm feeling really good.

And I don't want to tell anyone, because the scars of school sports are still with me. I was always good at academics but terrible at sports, was an out-of-shape teenager and my weight and fitness has fluctuated a lot as an adult. Sports were never big in my family and this feels like a real departure from the norm. Not that anyone would criticise me for it, but I do fear being mocked.

Does this resonate with anyone?
Resonates a bit, I think. I use fitness videos, and I won't let anybody be in the room with me for fear they will mock.

Congratulations!! As you get noticeably fitter, have fun lying about why. Pretend you've hardly done anything -- "Oh, I just quit drinking soda, is all."

This resonates a ton with me. I too am a slow but dedicated runner. I started doing slow jogging with a friend with whom I gossiped, and eventually trained for a full marathon with the Leukemia and Lymphoma society in 2006. I dedicated each mile to someone I knew who had received a cancer diagnosis. I ran half marathons for quite a while after that. I've slowed down now to 2.6 - 3.0 mile runs but still love it.

If you haven't found him yet, I recommend Jeff Galloway for further training. His run/walk approach will keep you running forever.

This resonates a LOT. I did Couch to 5K a few years ago, with a running group. I ran a lot, slowly, then hurt my knee and haven't run for ages. I really want to start again, but I think power walking is now more realistic for me.

Good on you, alto!

Bad at sports, I took up running in my mid 30s and ran 3 marathons.

I loved to run. It was, really, the only form of exercise I truly enjoyed. Sadly, a complicated back surgery put an end to running for me. I really miss it.

Run on, Alto!

I ran for 22 minutes yesterday! Two months ago I couldn't do that. Thanks for the support, folks, I really appreciate it.
