so let me know if you want an ello invite I just need an email address. Basically, trying to get everyone I like on there so I can ditch facebook completely for fun, and just use it to show pictures to the grandparents.

So I went on it and it looks a lot like Google+. Can anyone explain why it's better than G+? I was getting encouraged that a lot more people are using Google+ and maybe we'd have a shift of critical mass, but now this one seems to be the new shiny thing. Is it really different/better/faster/more?

I just read a bunch about it and am definitely going to hide and watch for a while. It looks like one of those things that has the business plan of (a) get millions of followers, (b) sell to one of the big companies. If it ended up replacing Facebook, great. But for now? No more profiles for me, dear heaven, no. So. many. profiles.

The user search seems to be useless. You can't paste a name in the search field, you have to type it in and it still can't find eideteker.

I've not had time to check it out at all but have always had a problem with Facebook in pure concept. Never having a "real" name and using some form of alias information in most everything makes it a flimsy thing anyway, but I don't understand why people want to replicate one facet of their lives into another. I use to think I should be able to submit writing on toilet paper and the strength of the writing would be what mattered, which is not true. Later it turned out people cared way more about packaging than substance. There's something weird about this stuff that is sort of packaging as substance and visa versa that doesn't make sense to me, because I wouldn't wrap a gift the same for two different people anymore than I'd invite a business acquaintance and a distant relative to the same party. Or say my mom and a writer I admired. Or any two random people. Maybe that's a lot of words to say I wouldn't choose to mix the people I choose to know with the people I happen to know to get the same newsletter, except that's not quite it either.

But everyone enjoys pictures of my cat dressed up as historical figures, archetypes, and other animals.

And that's the real lesson here for us all.

Maybe we just need a social network called "Pix o' Catz" and we can all like each other and upload cat pictures. That way we accomplish 90% of the purpose of social media with none of the awkward social interactions.

Or make it "Pix o' Catz N Kidz" and then you're up to 95%. Just as long as you could exclude one stream or the other. Filter:

_Show me pix o' catz
_Show me pix o' kidz
_Show me catz AND kidz

For the moment it seems everybody is only staking their claim to a username in case it takes off.
Do you all think that if we would move metachat to ello that it would be able to gain more momentum? Or is that a bad idea?

Wow, what awful ideas.
As I just resigned from a WWF game with what seemed to be a bigoted tween with reading comprehension problems (378 to its 47), I still don't think either is a way to go to avoid this situation or aid any other. If people want to just like cats and babies, that's most of the internet. Where is the part where we talk about ugly babies and people who abuse exclamation points? I have an innate mistrust of the latter. It reeks of perkiness, desperation and shoutiness.

Jouke, that cat is amazing. Reminds me of the time I couldn't find one of my kitties, and he had somehow managed to get outside on the second floor window, but was then stuck out there, as he couldn't get back in (screens bend out, but not in, apparently!).

So, what I don't like about this 'ello' is that, unless you know what someone has as their avatar, you have no idea who is posting stuff, unless they're replying to something and then it shows their @[username]. Is there any way to show people's user names? Or am I missing something here?

Has anyone actually ever gotten an invite?

I've been sent invites by at least 5 people, and have yet to receive even a peep.

I think the whole thing must be a scam, I just haven't figured out the angle yet.
