Shuffle-a-gogo - what's on your MP3 player? [More:]I have a crazy busy day today, so what better way to start it off than with my favorite procrastination exercise, doing a shuffle. You know the drill - set your MP3 delivery device off choice on shuffle and post the first ten songs. Here's mine with some additionaal comments.

1. GAL COSTA - Meu Nome e Gal (Gal Costa 1969) Starts out as a conventional Brazilian Tropicalia song of the era, but by songs end the guitars are more psychedelic, the drums are crazy, and she's wailing like Yoko Ono.

2. HANK THOMPSON - the Wild Side of Life (A Six Pack To Go 1965) Good old fashioned twangy country about drinking and losing the love of your life.

3. the JOE PERRY PROJECT - East Coast, West Coast (I've Got the Rock & Roll's Again 1981) - Wow, this is more generic than I remember it sounding. And by generic, I mean not very good.

4. DOVES - Black and White Town (Best of) It sounds like they're about to break into a giant Motown chorus, but instead just keep building.

5. CARLY SIMON - Mockingbird (Reflections: Greatest Hits) Wow, I really didn't need to hear this. Carly some fabulous singles, but this is definitely not one of them.

6. the DECEMBERISTS - A Cautionary Song (Castaways and Cutouts) I was late to the Decemberists party, but this album was a treat when i finally got around to checking itt out.

7. MEAT PUPPETS - Oh, Me (Meat Puppets II 1983) I'm not sure how, but I've managed to never see Meat Puppets live. I can't imagine them not being awesome live.

8. LONNIE DONEGAN - On a Monday (Skiffle Session) This is not a conventionaal shuffle for me - I don't even remember putting this on my player. Although a good old skiffle tune isn't a bad thing to be surprised with.

9. JOHNNY RIVERS - Parchman Farm (Anthology 1964-77) A swigning country rocker from a gorssly underrated performer. There's a lot more to his catalog than just "Secret Agent Man".

10. the CANDYSKINS - Let's Take Over the World (Fun? 1993) For my money the first two Candyskins album were flawless and are two of the best releases of the whole Britpop scene.

Wow, I guess my MP3 player is not in a new wave, rock, or power pop modde today.

So, what's on your shuffle?
Gal Costa is new to me and Oh So Wonderful. Here's some more clips.

1. Harold Burrage - Master Key (M-Pac single 1963) I love mixed metaphors. I love counting songs. I love formulaic music. I love the way Burrage's voice suddenly blasts off several times in this song, vaulting into orbisonian splendor.
2. Exuma - Seance in the Sixth Fret (Exuma, 1970) Exuma is so great. Unfortunately, he fell into obscurity pretty quickly, probably due to the unclassifiable nature of his records. Do you shelve it under folk? R&B/Soul? Rock? It's psychedelic, sure, but it hearkens to such old stuff, it's really roots music. Does your records store have a section for prog-folk/ur-music? Exuma's first album is in my desert island list.
3. Human Eye - They Came from the Sky (They Came from the Sky, 2011) Speaking of genres, is there such a thing as prog punk? Probably, since music classifiers are always hard at work. I think these guys fit it. I love this record. It makes my neighbor's dog bark.
4. Lights Out Asia - Running Naked Through Underground Cities (Hy-Brasil, 2012) This is one of those Jekyll and Hyde records for me. I either love the gauzy sentimentality, as I do for this song, or I find it uninspired and overproduced. This song has a subtly anthemic aspect that makes me think of Big Audio Dynamite or Slade.
5. Boxcutter - Ufonik (The Dissolve, 2011) I have this on a Planet Mu collection. I love the whirs and buzzes and the general shape of the space it fills, but I find the vocals a bit dull. It sounds like what TV on the Radio aspires to and sometimes achieves, but at least this song is short.
6. V.I.V.E.K. - Feel It (EP on Deep Medi Musik, 2010) I like dubstep, bass music, whatever it's called. The only problem I have is that too many DJ's refuse to simply rest on their sick beats, they want to throw dopey interview clips over the mix. That said, this beat is dope.
7. Manchester Orchestra - Pale Black Eye (Simple Math, 2011) This album's been in the spinner since it came out. I almost never fast-forward through a Manchester Orchestra song in a mix, but when I listen to the record by itself I tire of the singer's voice. The video for this record's title track is my favorite ever (trigger warning for folks who've been in a bad car accident; I have not and it makes me cry). "Pale Black Eye" is a marvellous crescendo.
8. The Notorious B.I.G. - Gimme the Loot (Ready to Die, 1994) Shit. Now that's what I'm talking about. Gimme the loot! Gimme the loot!
9. Solomon Burke - Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye) (Atlantic single, 1964) On some days my favorite singer is Sam Cooke, on some days, Solomon Burke. Can you believe the B-side to this was Someone to Love Me? This guy had stacks of great songs, and the most powerful message of love to give. He'll sure take any bad taste Biggie's homophobia/misogyny might have left in your mouth. For a real treat, listen to Soul Alive, recorded before an incredible Washington, D.C. crowd in 1983.
10. Robert Palmer - Every Kinda People (Double Fun, 1978) I've heard of people who, after listening to a fair number of Robert Palmer songs, still don't like his music. This song helps me accept that they exist, and indeed have a hand in making the world go 'round. I own all Robert Palmer's albums. He has a knack for taking the formulaic and mixing in a surprising touch here and there, to sublime effect.

1. Aaron Goldberg - OAM's Blues Came with the computer, I think.

2. Madonna - Candy Perfume Girl From Ray of Light, though I swear it was on Like a Prayer too.

3. Ella Fitzgerald - My Melancholy Baby Love Ella!

4. Ella Fitzgerald - I'll Chase the Blues Away Oh Shuffle, you joker...

5. Alabina - Eshebo (Chebba) I love Arabic-style singing

6. Lady Gaga - Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say) from The Fame. I felt eh about this album after about the 20th listen.

7. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Fable of the Brown Ape NOTHING WAS THE SAME AFTER BLIXA LEFT.

8. Trobar de Morte - Morgana My new guilty pleasure.

9. Loreena McKennitt - Prologue from The Book of Secrets. An old guilty pleasure.

10. Rhythm Nation Squad - Kaise Bani from Rockin' Da Nation. A mystery album of Indian pop music that someone burned for me a long time ago. The track I have is a remix of this one, which hails from Guyana. You'll notice there's English mixed into this version. Apparently it's a folk song in Bhojpuri, a language spoken in Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Guyana, Suriname, Fiji, and Mauritius, as well as by some older Pakistanis. Others: version from Dabangg 2 which featured Salman Khan (here are some wallpapers and you're welcome), you want a flashier dance number to go with that?, saris and vegetables?, better vocals? Aw yeah.

Sure, but I'm still in the (long, long) process of loading music onto my newish laptop. I'm maybe a fifth of the way there at best and there's no rhyme or reason really to what I've done so far. That said, let's spin the wheel:

1) Voodoo Glow Skulls - "Give Me Someone I Can Trust"

2) Screeching Weasel - "The Science of Myth"

3) Citizen Fish - "Face Off/Youth"

4) The Breeders - "S.O.S."

5) The Pogues - "Jesse James"

6) Squiggy - "Born Again"

7) The Dirtbombs - "Kung Fu"

8) Townes Van Zandt - "Lungs" (Live at Old Quarter)

9) Stiff Little Fingers - "78 RPM"

10) Tom Waits - "Closing Time"

Seems about right, actually.

My iPhone 4 was on death's door. I was finally able to upgrade but I forgot to back up my music. Yes, stupid me. OTOH it makes you think about what albums you really want back. So I started to (hopefully) refill my new iPhone 5 with stuff that I really want to hear, right now.

So far:

Axe Victim by Be Bop Deluxe
Classic Queen
The Game by Queen
Jazz by Queen
News of the World by (wait for it) Queen
25 Years On by The Hawklords
