An L-Shaped Conundrum Just saw our new apartment last night, trying to figure out how to assign the bedrooms.→[More:] Here's a rough Paint sketch of how the place is laid out. Orange circles are doors, red things are closets, gray things are radiators/heat poles.

I think Stynxno initially thought bedroom 1 would be ours and bedroom 2 would be for the baby, but now I'm thinking maybe it would be better for baby to have bedroom 1, since it's closer to the kitchen/living area; maybe he could play in there while I'm cooking. And I think we might be able to get more furniture in bedroom 2 (we have a queen-sized bed, nightstand, one big dresser and I think we need another) because of all the space taken up by radiators and heat poles in bedroom 1. The baby doesn't need as much furniture floor space (crib, two dressers with changing table on top). But then maybe it'd be better for baby and baby's stuff to be tucked away in bedroom 2?

Anyone have thoughts on this topic?

Bedroom 2 looks like it'd work better with a queen bed.

I'd go with Bedroom 2 for you. Anyway, if it doesn't work out, you can always swap over.

True! Ahhhhhhh, I'm getting excited. A lot of the packing at the house is done*, we have the keys to the new place, my cousin Peter is coming to town to help out with things (he's 22 with boundless energy, a great help for a move), and we have a friend at the seminary willing to entertain Oliver.

*Isn't packing the last of the stuff always the worst, though? That's when you start doing boxes that have, like, 3 sweaters, 1 plate, 4 random socks, a pair of eyeglasses and a crystal vase.

I had a terrible move once that ended with me continually circling around a tiny pile of a penny, a paperclip and a phone cord. "I should throw them away! I should keep them! I should throw them away! I should keep them!"

Don't feel bad. Two weeks ago we got rid of the box in our bedroom that contained an unused wedding album, three ice cube trays, an ugly Christmas sweater and humidifier filters for a model we no longer own. We moved to our current apartment in July of 2011.

(Yes, I have ADD. Why do you ask?)

Giiiirl, I know that song. I am trying to be ruthless but it's hard!

I know it's conventional wisdom for the biggest room to be the "master", but does that realy make sense for everybody? I would think kids should probably have bigger rooms since they play, have toys, etc. All I do in my room is get dressed and sleep.

I just switched my bedroom to the smallest one in the house and I LOVE it. It's cozy and the coolest room in the house. I've always given one of the kids the largest room - they did have more stuff and they also spent more time in the bedroom than I do, so it just made sense.

Oooo, is that a fireplace I see? Layout seems nice. It's always fun, setting up a new place. A lot of work, but fun. We've been at our current apartment ten years now, the longest I've lived anywhere, including my parents' house. I get a little panicky when I think of moving, though it's no palace. But it's home. Course, since we don't own it, we'll have to move one day, but for now...

Anyway, enjoy the new place. And, of course, set it up how you like. No rules. Do what's good for you. Oliver will probably take over the whole place in no time anyway. ; )

Probably depends on how long you plan to stay there, to some extent. Bedroom 1 looks like it would be better suited for a kid, only because the shape better allows for separate sleep and play areas (this is particularly important for boys, in my experience).

However, bedroom 2 looks like it's little more separated from the living areas, which is good for keeping different noises separated, plus do you really want to be able to see the mess that is a kid's bedroom from the living area?

It will probably come down to where the queen bed fits - bedroom 1 may simply be too small to fit the bed properly and then the choice will be made for you!

We'll just be there for a year! After graduation, we get the boot and then on to our next adventure.

I measured both rooms tonight- bedroom 1 is 18'5" by 8'5" and bedroom 2 is 9'3" by 10'10". Not sure bedroom 1 is wide enough to have the queen bed and nightstand side by side, I'll have to measure our stuff!

I currently have a smaller room as a bedroom; it's easier to heat & cool and quieter & darker. I think it will be this way in my new place as well, also because i should try to be better about my sleep hygiene, but in all reality, since I do almost everything through my laptop, the idea that I'm not going to take it into the bedroom is almost laughable.

Keep the crib in your bedroom, use BR2 as an office/studio!
