A Star Trek nerd would probably argue that they're not actually beamed up, but instead are de-materlised in situ and are then rematerlised back on the Starship Enterprise.

But I am not that nerd. I once mixed up Star Wars and Star Trek on Metafilter and then said, oh well, they're both the same, aren't they. I quickly found out that they are not.

I can hear the beam-up sound effects in my head. I just noticed this when I looked at the picture. Is that odd, or do others remember and hear it too?

I remember and hear it also.

This is the one ST technology that shows no signs of "materializing" -- much to my disappointment. Everything else is here.
