It's a lyrics challenge! Come inside and play...[More:]

I think most of them are pretty easy. They span decades and genres, so there's something for everyone, although people who know my personal music taste are obviously at an advantage :)

1. The universe is shaped exactly like the earth
2. Some of them want to be used by you
3. A family of trees wanting to be haunted
4. I put my trousers on, have a cup of tea and I think about leaving the house
5. I pour the drinks and crush the flowers
6. Stay in bed, float up stream
7. I could live a little better with the myths and the lies
8. I will be your Ferdinand and you my wayward girl
9. Model citizen, zero discipline
10. You wept but your soul was willing

2. Eurhythmics - Sweet Dreams
3. MGMT - Kids
4. Blur - Parklife

Ok. That last one is a bit obscure.

7 is She's Lost Control, by Joy Division.

Yes, Bearwife!

Ha! You can't fool me jouke! C is Schubert's Erlkönig.
posted by JanetLand 26 April | 14:26
And I think D is that creepy Falco song I can't remember the name of.
posted by JanetLand 26 April | 14:52
Oww. Janet that's so cool. Erlkönig is such a glorious song. I'm glad you recognised it.
And it's such a dramatic and anguished pivotal line.

And yes D is the creepy song. When in highschool I could make girls in my class shiver with my rendering of that evil line.
A dubious glory to be sure.

I is sung by the band The Beatles.

H is about sailors obviously. On shore leave. Rather well known song.

G is sung by someone who smoked a lot. Trying to maintain his low velvet voice. I once sang that song to my toddler daughter before bed. And then noticed that both daugher and her mother became rather subdued and pensive.
Strange powers!

J is a WWI anglo-german song. The

The other ones I can't expect you to know.

1 Modest Mouse, "Third Planet" This is the Modest Mouse song that really stuck with me over the years.

H Jacques Brel, "Amsterdam." In college, before I switched to Japanese, I was a French Lit major, so even though I was in the Japanese department, I was eligible to live in the off-campus French House. All the real French majors were off on a semester abroad so there was just the Belgian teaching assistant, my special lady, and me, eating crêpes, drinking wine, and listening to Jacques Brel day in, day out. An icon.

J "Lili Marleen." My dad can't really carry a tune, and only took German classes through high school (to appease my grandfather, whom my grandmother posthumously nicknamed "The Prussian General"), but he would sing this to me when I was a boy in the same jaunty manner in which would declaim whichever Goethe poems he still remembered by rote. "You know, Goethe was a universal genius," he'd say with a wink.

Yay, Hugh! First time one of my lyrics challenges has been finished in a day.

Wonderful Huig. Yes, Lili Marleen is such a sweet wistful song that even 70 yrs later it captured me when I was in highschool.
Strange to think of that teenage boy singing songs in 1930s style.
Thanks to the soundtrack of The Singing Detective. That taught me a lot of great old songs btw.

Dans le port d'Amsterdam is such a perfect song as he sang it live in 1964 in the Olympia. But the lyrics are pretty revolting I think. I guess I'm not very Gargantuan.

G is The Very Thought of You by Nat King Cole.

I is the German version that the Beatles made of She Loves You. Oh ja, sie liebt dich. Schöner kann es gar nicht sein.

F is the Baroque opera Pygmalion. I used to sing all the voices. Now I can't do the soprano anymore. :-(

Aha, no wonder, the version of "The Very Thought of You" I hear in my head is Billie Holiday's, so your clue would have misled me even if I did recognize the lyric. I think it may have been a hit for Bing Crosby first. In any case, great selection overall. I like your style.

I sat and watched The Singing Detective with my mom many years ago. She was a librarian, really into mysteries, and there was a public broadcasting show called "Mystery!" that would pick up BBC productions. I remember the music from The Singing Detective quite well. Thanks for mentioning it: you can't have known but you've sparked some sweet quiet memories of my mom, which I really appreciate.

By the way, I think I recall chatting with you about Schlager music at some point. In the other music thread I linked a Japanese song I think you might like: Kaerokana. It's a very sentimental song, about country parents wondering about their kids, gone off to live in the city. The singing is very idiomatic but the song is classic. The Enka genre reminds me of Schlager. Kitajima Saburo's songs transcend the form.

Ha, Hugh, I'm glad you have some dear memories connected to The Singing Detective. I sang quite a few of those songs to my baby daughter.

The idea that there's a correspondence between the sentimental drink fueled songs from the lower class Jordaan neighbourhood of Amsterdam and songs in Japan is fascinating.
Thank you for the links. Especially the last one.

Especially the last one.

It's about a woodcutter named Yosaku and his wife:

Yosaku cuts down a tree
Hey Hey Ho, Hey Hey Ho
The tree's soul returns home
Hey Hey Ho, Hey Hey Ho
His wife is weaving
Ton ton ton, ton ton ton
She's a good-natured daughter-in-law
Ton ton ton, ton ton ton
Yosaku, Yosaku, darkness has fallen again
Yosaku, Yosaku, your wife is calling
Ho Ho Ho Ho

On the thatched roof
Hey Hey Ho, Hey Hey Ho
Stardust is falling
Hey Hey Ho, Hey Hey Ho
His wife beats the straw
Ton ton ton, ton ton ton
Such a hard worker
Ton ton ton, ton ton ton
Yosaku, Yosaku, another day breaks
Yosaku, Yosaku, The mountain is calling
Ho Ho Ho Ho
posted by Hugh Janus 28 April | 18:04
Oh, I should clarify: "ton ton ton" is a sound effect, like knocking on wood.
posted by Hugh Janus 28 April | 18:09
So "hey ho" in Japanese means "hey ho"? :-)
Thank you for the translation.

Btw here's the version by Nat King Cole. It's not easy to create the same kind of quality in ones voice. But when you hit it it's pretty cool.
I'll listen to Billy Holidays version.
