12 April 2013

A commercial jingle that has been running through my head for about 30 years now.
Haha! Awesome! My brother and I sing this to each other sometimes.

Though for form's sake I seriously wish this post were a Rickroll.

You have just renewed my determination to make a website about Earworms (I already have the domain, EarWormHole.com... just need to test out some 'ratings' plugins on WordPress to make it interactive).

This one haunts me to this day.

This one used to drive me insane.

Here's a classic (don't say I didn't warn you).

There is nothing I like better than a good Rickroll.

My dad told me that Cal Worthington was originally mocking a rival car dealer who included his dog in ads.

We didn't have the putt putt brand; we just called it miniature golf.

For many years, I thought miniature golf WAS CALLED putt putt -- I didn't realize that was a brand name.

I wonder how you've been getting any work done for the last 30 years.

One of the boons of not having a tv is being safe from ad men planting meme virii like that in my brain.

I found out that a nursery rhime my mother taught me when I was a toddler was originally a jingle.
From a department store that closed in 1912!!
I mentioned this anecdote to some other Dutch person. And he knew the rhyme as well.
How's that for retention.
(If there are any Dutchies here: I'm talking about the Winkel van Sinkel.)
Nowadays the highly ornamental building in the heart of the city still exists under the same name. It functions as a so called grand café (aerial photo).
When I walk by and see the name on the façade I still need to suppress the jingle dwarfs in my head from starting chanting the rhyme.

Jingle Dwarfs!

Suppress the Jingle Dwarfs!

Jingle Dwarfs in my head!

Suppress the Jingle Dwarfs in my head!

Fantastic.

I can still sing the radio jingle for the old Ayr-Way stores. You Hoosiers remember Ayr-Way, right? Right???

I'm sure the jingle dwarfs mean well. But their strong tendency towards echolalia make me wonder how far they are on the spectrum.

jouke: is this it?

No, I guess somebody wanted to write a modern childrens song, knew the old ditty and reused the name.
Just as well because what is a young child to make of a rhyme about corsets and pommade?
