NYC dinner out We got a babysitter to go on a date night tomorrow night for dinner, but I don't know where to go. What do you suggest, people? Manhattan, preferably toward the west side (A, C, 1 lines), somewhere quiet & grown-up.
Somewhere I can get a reservation for! That might narrow things down.

And good service! I hate shelling out for a dinner & getting lousy service. We could go to one of our old favorites, I guess (Artisinal is a big one), but I'm in the mood for something new. Italian, maybe?

Hmmm, Rosemary's is the hip new Italian place, near the A C 1 - might be a bit shirt notice for them but you could try.

That place looks good! They do not accept reservations, walk-ins only. I wonder how long we'd wait if we showed up around 8ish?

I'm willing to go somewhere I don't need a reservation for, but here's what I don't want (and I feel like we do this a lot): go to place, find out wait is two hours, wander around aimless & hungry trying to find some other place that looks good in a neighborhood I'm not overly familiar with.

No idea, only ever been there for lunch. I'd call.

Oh the Trattoria Toscana looks soild and friendly http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/trattoria-toscana/

Yelp confirms the wait at Rosemary's would probably be 1.5-2 hours. Too much for me on a babysitter's dime!

Trattoria Toscana it is! I have a reservation for 8 pm. I knew you'd be able to help me, I should've just titled this post PAGING THE WHELK.

Next time, you might try La Boite en Bois, on W. 68th. My brother recommended it to me when I was in town, and it was very sweet. Nice prix-fixe selection, too.

For future reference, Lupa is very good, per Splunge.

NGAM on 3rd between 12th and 13th is further downtown but has badass Thai food. They were even on Iron Chef America.

Yeah, Lupa was my favorite NYC restaurant, bar none. Consistently superb food, great wine cellar coupled with knowledgeable and friendly staff. Not cheap, but not overpriced for the quality. Two thumbs up. My favorite dish there? The Tuesday special: Crispy Duck Agrodolce. To. Die. For.

Lupa's also my favorite NYC restaurant, though I've never lived in NYC so my opinion should count less. But it's seriously awesome.
