Voting Rights Act? Is anyone worried about this at all?
Very.

One dollar, one vote, just the way it was in the Good Old Days.

Scalia's quite a piece of work.

Kennedy's no prize either.

Yeah, I've been semi-following this. It's very, very sad. Between this and the efforts underway in several states to re-write electoral college rules, it almost seems that we are witnessing an organized, multi-pronged attack on democracy. But, that would be paranoid thinking...right?

this really bothers me along with a couple other decisions this court has taken in the last few years. I'm like, do these guys understand how serious this is? It's not an abstract freshman debate throwing amendment titles around. This stuff affects so many people's lives. And you want to troll during oral argument about the VRA involving racial privilege. pathetic.

Hell yeah, this is all about establishing (or re-establishing) their personal privilege and power. They have learned well from all the despots and dictators of the last century (and here's a clue, you don't have to take away anybody's guns to do it). Future generations will look upon many current and recent American political figures the way we look at the higher officials of the German Nazis and Soviet Communists.
That is, if anybody's allowed to make such judgments. "It Can Happen Here" and it is.

From the linked article:

"Justice Sonya Sotomayor said that Shelby County, Ala., probably wasn't the right part of the country to be challenging a key provision of the Voting Rights Act.

"Some parts of the South have changed. Your county pretty much hasn't," said Sotomayor. "You may be the wrong party bringing this.""

Extremely worried. This is a reactionary court except when Kennedy gets it right. I have been hoping for the early demise of Scalia, Roberts, Alito or Thomas -- or even Kennedy -- for quite awhile now. Sometime in the next 3 years, please God.

the other recent cases I'd mentioned that I find upsetting:

District Attorney's Office v. Osborne

Florence v. Board of Chosen Freeholders

this one is also kinda problematic: Kentucky v. King

they're all related to Due Process and the court came on the police/prosecutor side in each case
