Don't you want to take me on a sea cruise? Pursuant to this impulsive comment of mine on the blue, what does everyone think of the idea of maybe organizing a Metafilter cruise or maybe resort getaway sometime? I know we wouldn't by an stretch get enough to fill a cruise ship, but surely there are a few dozen or so who would be interested and able to sign on? And would it not be a truly epic meetup? What do you all think?
I think it is a very cool idea that would address the biggest deficit we noticed on our otherwise rather nice Mediterranean cruise last September -- the lack of great, smart people. Having said that, I'd have to talk my Bear into it, so this is a maybe yes from me.

I mean, there were some great, smart people on our cruise, of course, but not as many as would be guaranteed with a cruise of bunnies.

I've long had a fantasy of being a part of a group of like-minded people, such as those from Metafilter, who move enmasse to say, a small town in Nova Scotia or an abandoned neighbourhood in Detroit and turn it into a wonderful community. The cruise or resort idea would be like a smaller scale, much more attainable version of my community fantasy.

Oooh yes, I'd love to do this.

I would think it'd be pretty easy to organize a Metafilter cruise- big groups (like, 12+) go on cruises all the time, I would think a travel agent or even the cruise line itself would be able to keep track of group members, let them sit together, etc.

As for a resort getaway, what about renting a huge house, or group of cottages? That would be ideal for something low-key where people could cook their own meals, etc.

2015 is the 10th anniversary of metachat, btw. If we're still around...

I would need about six months lead time in order to save up enough money, but I am a 95% definite yes.

Good points TPS about an agent or Line helping organize. I'm sure there are nice places that have little cabins or guest-houses that could be part of a group package.

If I where able to join the bunnies at their vacation warren, I would vote for an olde timey Adirondack loge . Alas, I will have to enjoy my cilantro from afar.

I do, however, expect many pictures and, perhaps a souvenir like, say, a nice leather travel duffel with a commemorative embossing of a bunny and the date/location. Okay, fine. A t-shirt would be good too.

(OrangeSwan, that is a really nice fantasy you have. I would join in without a second thought.)

I'm encouraged by your interest and posted a MeTa thread to float the idea to the larger community. Not that we bunnies couldn't have our own snottly little clique within the larger group of course...

The group gathering sounds fun!

I would, likewise, need time to save up.

Let's do this shit.

Going on a cruise has never interested me before (esp. after reading DFW), but I would totally go with you all. Preferably the kind where we don't have to get dressed up for dinner :)

Sounds fun... The Vegas get together (when Jon and I got married) was a blast. I vote for August in whatever year (for us teachers : )

We went on a Carnival Cruise to the Caribbean last August and had a great time. It would have been amazing with the bunnies!

I'd love it. I would also need quite a bit of time to save up, though.

I am on vacation right now at the moment, the tail end of it, and while it is wonderful, warm, busy, I am ready to be home in front of the wood stove with a nice book.

But I am sure I will get over it.

Interesting idea. I'm not sure about a cruise but a mountain lodge or beach resort would be right up my alley.

I can not imagine the IRL hilarity of it all. Besides, there would be all sorts of machine tech to explore.

I could totally make it in 2015. Chained in Plato's cave until then, so genuine travel would be near-unbearable delight to even seriously think about, and this gives me time to bank sizable ducats.
I can start work designing commemorative swag Wednesday, will probably entertain variables and probabilities during next bout of insomnia.
Never been on a cruise, but doesn't someone always "disappear" or everyone get the plague on a surprisingly common basis?
Could we book a gay cruise so Margaret Cho can attend? I can officiate and will bring all the forms and paperwork. I say we at least get someone citizenship out of the shebang and use the registry to defray costs for the needy.

The idea of this excited me and the idea of broadening the group to MeFi even more so. But then I went to the MeTa thread and realised that most of the people there seem to be completely ignorant of the fact that a lot of people don't live in the US (or dont care) and I got sad and couldn't read the rest of the thread. A MeCha cruise, enough time to save permitting, would be absolutely the ducks guts.
posted by dg 16 February | 18:33
Don't be sad dg. We'll just organise our own global boat trip; island hopping along the mediterranée or something like that.

Although those Aldondirack lodges that someone posted looked very exotic and thus attractive to this west-european.
posted by jouke 16 February | 18:46
Yeah, it's not really a big deal - the hard reality is that MeFi is very US-centric in many ways, so I have no cause to be bothered.

The conversation on MeTa seems to be leaning towards NOLA in 2014 which, at around AUD2,500 for return flights and a week of accommodation, is possibly something I could work towards if all the stars align for me. Hawaii would be a pretty logical choice to my geographically-challenged mind in terms of accessibility (and is $1,000 cheaper for me).
posted by dg 16 February | 19:24
Oh, I wasn't quite serious. To be honest I had forgotten for a moment that you're in AU. (the lack of profiles on metachat makes identity a bit opaque to me)

The thought of traveling far for a Nawleans mefi meetup...
It reminds me of how I traveled across the Northsea for the 10th anniversary meetup in London.
I think of myself as rather geeky and somewhat introverted. But the London meetup involved pouring over maps of underground tunnels (i.e. subway). To me that doesn't constitute a party.
And at an SF meetup the conversation circled around a metatalk flameout that was happening right at that moment. People seemed somewhat regretful that they were otherwise occupied in a pub.
So that's a longwinded way of saying that I wouldn't travel that far for it. But that's just me.
Enfin, I quit mefi anyway. So it's all academic.

[throws a big wad of garlic bread at jouke]

I am a somewhat shy person; however, depending on the ordinary mass of normal human life things that might happen, I might would go to something like this. Especially in Hawaii.

Maybe there could be some sort of Occupy Guy's American Kitchen And Bar for a week. I will bring the poop bags.
posted by johnpowell 17 February | 02:14
The flight to Hawaii from the east coast of the US is so, so long and expensive. Sad because I love Hawaii.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 17 February | 07:08
I can't go to New Orleans in hot weather. I just can't. I can barely get through July in Toronto. I'd LOVE to go to NOLA, but it would have to be a cold season trip, and I don't know if anyone would be up for that.
posted by Orange Swan 17 February | 10:36
A visit to New Orleans demands a lot of outdoor time, so I could only do a cold season trip as well.
posted by Ardiril 17 February | 10:49
I'm interested. MeFi 10 in Nola was fun.
posted by halonine 17 February | 17:43
This would be so awesome. With enough notice, I'd be able to save up and schedule time off work.

I've been to upstate NY, near Lake Placid, during the summer and it was wonderful. Fishing, swimming, outdoors exploring and relaxing, tons of reading. I'd love to do that again. It was also the first time I ever saw a full-service gas station and went outside the US (we drove through Canada to get there), so that was neat. If some sort of cabin like thing interests people, we could try Vacation Rentals by Owner. My boss used that site for large family gatherings and had good experiences.

A cruise would also be cool - I've never been on one before. Although there is part of me that's a bit afraid of something Titanic-scale happening.
