The Light That Shines: Showing Cancer Patients They're Beautiful Jill Conley was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 31. Only six months into her marriage, she and her husband had to go through the horrors of chemo, radiation, a double mastectomy and a problematic reconstruction before she finally entered remission. Now 35, she has been diagnosed with incurable stage 4 bone cancer.
Everything about this stuff is so complex.

I mean, I'm personally really sick of Fabulous Cancer(tm), but coping mechanisms are just that, and maybe it means something to people.

Here she is on Facebook. Here she is on local TV on Christmas Eve. I hope she has many many days of peace.

I also hope we can develop a greater range of reactions and support mechanisms for terminal illness. The more important part of the story than her physical beauty is in the local news story - she had symptoms, and didn't get them looked at for a long time. That's something that we could really stand for more people to know - more people than will see her in a pretty dress by the Arc de Triomphe. I don't say that to blame her or judge her her portrait photographer but just to note that it's fairly fucked up, what the culture decides to pay attention to about cancer and other terminal illness, and what it would rather ignore. That dynamic plays a part in the whole social pathology around terminal illness.

She's tough, and I liked her attitude in the news report. My thoughts are with her and everyone facing this.
