Amy Stein's "Domesticated" series depicts humans and animals interacting in our largely artificially-controlled environments. They're beautiful photos, but I also find them heartbreakingly sad.
And sometimes, as Senyar says, deeply disturbing. E.g. the raccoon and the turkey.
It's their world too. No matter how many lies we tell ourselves about how we're the best and most important species, we're wrong. And we're taking what isn't ours, to the damage of our whole planet.
For some reason, the deer rounding the house corner and the little face peeping out the window had a different effect on me than the other photos. It seemed less dire, more about the breathlessness of the moment.
Oh wow. I met her! We had a brown bag lunch with her at work. She is super brilliant. It was amazing to hear the backstory and all the work that goes into constructing these pictures.
And kind of echoing what bearwife said, these photos upset me because they're a really well-defined depiction of nature in retreat, and of the hurt we put onto our planet. Nature is losing, and representing nature as a single animal (in most of the pics) just really drives it all home.
