Shane McGowan on Fairytale of New York I think this is his wife's blog - it's kind of an interesting read. And, in case you, like me, had somehow never seen the actual video, here it is.
A great post, thanks mgl. Just reposted the interview on my Facebook. It's a good songwriting story! I said on FB that the devotion to the song has really stepped into the mawkish zone over the last few years, but that this reminded me that it is a very carefully crafted and memorable song. THanks.

The melody quotes a particular IRish jig that I've heard but can't put my finger on. The Chieftains' Skyline jig is pretty close.

The video reminded me that Kristy MacColl was one of my fashion icons in high school. So cute - I wanted to look just like that. I got as far as the overcoat.

So, so good.

Man just seeing Kristy MacColl's name makes me sad. This duet version of "A New England" with Billy Bragg breaks my heart every time.

Hate to admit that I'd never heard (or heard of) that song until a few years ago when it was posted to the blue.

Thanks for posting this. It's fun to hear about how things like this come to be and Shane McGowan is always interesting.
