30 November 2012

What are you up to this weekend? 3-point update [More:]
1. I'm heading out soon to a local supper club (a private restaurant in someone's house). This will make up for the suckiness of today. (I took my Prius in following a recall, and ended up £323 - $520 - lighter because it needed something else fixing on it. Then there was a problem paying for it because I realised I didn't have my credit card. I'd last used it at the supermarket yesterday evening, so I phoned and they had it. I had to leave my watch as collateral with the Toyota dealership, while I drove over to the supermarket to pick up my credit card so I could drive back to the Toyota place and pay for the car repair. So much sitting in rush-hour home-time traffic, which filled me with Grar.)

2. Tomorrow I'm going to Birmingham to meet up with a friend who lives in the Midlands. There's a huge German Christmas Market on in the city centre, which was fun the last time I visited it a few years ago. And Val and I will have a nice lunch and we'll catch up on each other's lives.

3. Sunday will be Christmas Card Day, where I'll write out all my cards while I watch TV.

What are you doing this weekend?
1. Hosting some people tonight for a little party. I only ate yogurt today so far so I can eat all the appetizery things we have later.

2. Might go get a facial tomorrow because my friend is finishing up at Beauty School (not a dropout) and she needs clients for her practicum. It's $40 for an hour, in case any other NYC mefites are interested too, it's at the Aveda school.

3. Maybe going to see Anna Karenina on Sunday with some girlfriends, but I might be tired from chores and not want to go out.

1) Husband is away for work so its me and the kid. Tonight we'll hang out at home and he'll watch one of his current favorite DVD's - either Yo Gabba Gabba or a documentary on the history of windmills which we got from the windmill museum in Lubbock, TX. Kid is 6 and has eclectic taste.

2) Tomorrow morning we're going to a Musical Rainbow concert - a series that the Cleveland Orchestra does for the preschool set. Kid loves classical music and knows every instrument in the orchestra. This particular show features the Vivacious Viola.

3) On Sunday - Holiday party at the Children's Hospital connected to son's school so he'll have some fun there and then we'll go see my nephew's first apartment downtown.

Tonight, think I'll make a mushroom and bean dish that looks tasty, then hang with my Bear and some episodes of Homeland (first season.)

Saturday, I've got errands to run, mostly involving mail, and a massage scheduled for 4 pm. Hoping we're going to see Lincoln, which looks great, after that.

Sunday is entirely unplanned. Which means reading the Sunday paper, working the crossword, maybe some yoga, more time with my Bear and the pets, reading, maybe an online course session or uploading photos or doing some more figuring out of my camera. Later on, some cooking for the week. Aaaah.

Headed to the Imperial War Museum with the fam, and then my work holiday party at Burghley House with the spouse (mostly just to drink wine in the kitchen). Not sure about Sunday.

Yes, I'm aware how absurdly grand this weekend happens to be.
posted by tortillathehun 30 November | 15:41
I went to Burghley recently, tortilla - only as a paying visitor, though. Stamford is a very pretty town. The house wasn't as Tudor as I'd hoped (I can't stand 18th century frilliness), apart from that kitchen...

Me? Playing some music with a couple of friends and someone they know from out of town. And resting. A lot of resting.

1. Tonight I have to exercise and eat leftovers.

2. Saturday it's grocery shopping in the morning and then opera all afternoon.

3. Sunday I will set up a new printer and find a place to put the cedar chest that's been acting as a coffee table because I now have a real coffee table. I also have to tidy up the house because there might actually, startlingly, uncharacteristically be people coming to it some evening next week.

Recording a rather complex guitar solo.

1. After some post office clusterfuckery, I really need to get out and do something fun. Tonight it is Anna Karenina with a girlfriend, after which we will come back to my house, eat chocolate and drink tea and yak until one of us gets too sleepy to sit upright.

2. Tomorrow is baking and tidying up around the house day. Like Senyar, at some point I will just sit down and do all of my Christmas cards. Tomorrow night is the Messiah sing along that I will attend with another girlfriend. She sings soprano like I do, the difference is she has a gorgeous voice, and I sometimes just mouth the words.

3. Sunday there is a holiday art market out in Saxapahaw, which I hope to drag my husband to. As long as it is "before football", he should be good to go. There will also be more baking and general futzing around the house. I need to relax.

That freaking sucks senyar.

1. Working half days Saturday and Sunday. Which is good because I'm driving my Mom to the local symphony Saturday evening: I'll get to bed around midnight Saturday and get up at 5:00 Sunday morning.

2. I just finished Thanksgiving leftovers so expect stupor to overtake soon. Must wash hair tonight since tomorrow wake up is at 4:30.

3. Dang. I forgot to pick up prescription at drug store. I'll have to do without until I get into town tomorrow. My brain is overloaded.
posted by mightshould 30 November | 17:56
Tonight, I party. I usually go to bed around 9:30, so we'll see how long I last. I'm lame now :D

Tomorrow, church Holiday Craft Fair! We'll be helping man the "Book Nook"! Also, at night, we'll do an experiment with our fuse box to see if there's someone in the building leeching off our power. We got a HUGE power bill for this month and last month and there's no way in hell it's just this apartment.

Sunday, church and dinner with a family from the congregation.

Tonight, just chill.
Tomorrow, do some work that I didn't get to this week. Maybe I'll do it Sunday instead. Depends.
Tomorrow evening, drinks with coworkers present and past. I love my job!
Sunday: cook some food for my friend who is trying his best to finish his dissertation by December 14th! Wish him luck!

Oh noes! I don't know what I'll be doing. My exams ended on Wednesday and since then I have been whiling time away til my parents drive here to pick me up. So...

1. Move a few more stacks of stuff to the recycling area. Pack for Salvation Army drop off on the way to church tomorrow.

2. Maybe dress up and go to the library and borrow a DVD and rent a screening room? And knit.

3. Finish making and writing cards! (:

Saturday has pretty much been given over to martial arts. The kids and I are doing karate and jujitsu, and if I don't hurt myself, I'll do the grown up MMA class, too.

Sunday is chore day, plus the special purging project, where the kids get rid of a metric shit ton of toys to be able to actually play in their rooms.

Hubby got the garage tricked out with his computer stuff, so now I can finally set up my sewing machine and fix the kids' clothes.

Oh! Getting the Christmas stuff out and wearing my hat! Finally able to look forward to that after about three years.

I have a rare Saturday off and I'm so giddy that I don't know where to start first. I'll be dropping off my magazine collections at the nearest hospital's waiting room; and figuring out how to decorate the yard this year. Also, it'd be nice if I finished with the tons of ornaments for the tree!

Sunday: Fill out Christmas cards, read the paper, and whatever strikes my fancy (housework , sadly, never strikes my fancy). I just hope all the pets let me sleep in a bit.

1. Spent today being out with mom and then went to dance class. Now I need to write my responses to the questions from my West person and finish my Beltane paper (which is due tomorrow).

2. Tomorrow I have bellydance bootcamp in the morning and then have to rush home to shower and head over to Ashton so mom and I can go to her church's winter craft fair thing (which I suspect will be full of jewelry people, ugh). Then I have Wicca 101 at night (and will have to present/turn in my Beltane paper.)

3. Sunday, as always, is a work day for me. I have actual work to do for once.
posted by sperose 30 November | 22:01
1. Order xmas gifts off the internets.

2. Get a haircut.

3. Try to not sleep my life away.

1. Today was lazy-ish; late lunch with my dad, followed by doing not much of anything much.

2. Tomorrow I'm volunteering at the animal shelter's open house. I think I'm mostly just sitting at an info table for two hours, but they're doing the Blessing of the Animals right when I'm done, so I'm looking forward to seeing that.

3. Sunday is so far unscheduled, but will probably involve the gym and/or the local forest preserve and/or making a trek to Whole Foods because I am craving salmon and they have the best fish.
posted by occhiblu 30 November | 22:50
1. I'm volunteering as a host at this holiday historic house tour event in town. I'm mostly excited because they chose to do it in a cool Victorian seaside neighborhood - I love that history, and I'm just nosy and want to see inside the houses.

2. Midday I'm hoping we can do all of: visit the Open Studios at a local artists' mill studio thingie, go to the new location of a venerable German sausage and European-grocery place that now has a sit-down sandwich component, and get our Christmas tree.

3. Sunday I have to work, which is meh. But the work is facilitating a wool felt hat making workshop, which is cool. So downside is working weekend, upside is I should walk away with my own homely and ill-crafted felt hat.

1. Hopefully husband will take kid out for a few hours tomorrow so I can get some work done. I am still nearly a week behind in my work queue thanks to the unexpected week off from Sandy. (would have made it up by now, but thanksgiving and veterans day put me back too). Gotta get my long run in, too.

2. We are going to buy and put up our Christmas tree tomorrow evening. I will man drinks and put on xmas music.

3. Sunday is all kiddo all morning. She has ballet, then a birthday party. Afternoon is hanging out watching football and making soup (pumpkin, yellow pepper and smoked paprika. Hopefully it will be good.)

My goodness, we have so many Christmas card makers! I guess that shouldn't surprise me, as MeCha is a crafty, hands-on bunch.

Well, tonight I went for a run, then hung out with the hubby and watched the new Parker Posey movie and a couple vintage episodes of Amazing Stories and then some Pingu before he shuffled off to bed. Now I'm smoking some J and cuddling with the cat and uploading some FM broadcasts from Timbuktu that I recorded there just a few days before the rebellion started in January. I've posted some excerpts on SoundCloud and some of my other Mali-loving friends are waxing wistful, so I'm putting up the longer unedited recordings for their enjoyment.

Tomorrow it is supposed to RAIN! YAY! in Los Angeles, so I will probably walk over to the cafe and watch it drizzle and fog and continue researching my next musicology trip to the archipelago of Socotra, Yemen, in March. For which I'm also Kickstarting, so I have to send some more markety/networky type e-mails to drum up funds. Then we'll probably have a date night, dinner and a movie, because that's what we do on Saturdays.

Sunday is mostly a glorious mystery, but I have to record some foley for a radio production, which means standing in the alley behind our place throwing ice cubes at a telephone post while I record it with a shotgun mic. Then I have to record someone badly playing the piano on behalf of a particular stage character. And there'll be another run in there somewhere.

Friday night I did the advent calendar, and cooked dinner for a friend. So today was cleaning of the kitchen, an hour or so of childcare for my in-laws and much writing (got a short thing finished, and the latest thrilling instalment of our RP campaign written up).

So for the remaining section of the weekend we have:

1. coffee with the kid and a friend in the city

2. edit/rewrite what I wrote tonight

3. listening to How To Destroy Angels' new EP compulsively.

1) Visit my mum in hospital
2) Try to reduce stress at yoga
3) Hopefully get some sleep

1. LOTS of papers to grade (my oh my they do pile up -- I've resorted to check/check plus/check minus where I can). Grades are due Tuesday, and I have to enter all the data into our online grade book, which I can't decide is a help or hindrance (takes a long time to enter individual grades, but it calculates for you -- funny thing is, after all that grading and numbers crunching, the final grades almost always equal my estimates). College Letters of Recommendation to write for a couple kids, too.

2. Ordered a GPS device for the car from Amazon. We had one in the rental when we went up to Maine in September, and it was so great -- didn't get lost once, no frustration, no yelling -- I finally bit the bullet and bought one. I tried getting by on a free app version on my iPad when we went to the casino over Thanksgiving (our new tradition), but we missed a turnoff on NYC's jigsaw puzzle of a highway system and pretty much had to start over. We made it there, but not without some screaming, I'm afraid. Amazon had a nice one for $99, half the price at Staples.

3. Planning a nice birthday dinner for Jon Sunday (his birthday's actually the 3rd, Monday, but Sunday's easier for us both). Porterhouse steaks, crab cakes, au gratin potatoes, creamed spinach -- all his favorites. It's his Elvis year (42), as he likes to say.

I finally got my haircut, yay! And we got new towels for the bathroom, yay! Got some kitchen stuff for the mister, yay!

Was reminded that our 12 year anniversary is tomorrow, yay!

Well, it's Sunday already, so some of this is past tense...

On Friday night, we did nothing much. Ate pizza and salad and hung out at home with the baby.

Saturday I was home with the kid and my husband worked all day. That night, we went to a Christmas party for a little while.

Today, guess what, home with the kid while my husband works! My days are beginning to run together. Tonight we will probably go to my in-laws for dinner.

Right now: Listening to a CLE lecture on CD so I can fulfill my CLE requirements by the end of the year. I have to listen to a recording of a CLE and note the codes (there are two given an hour) to prove that I listened. Boooooooring.

1. I went to a house birthday party for my coworker, who I have a crush on. And I met his girlfriend of 3 weeks. Who thinks I'm so so cool and wants me to teach her how to argue better with him. So.

2. Packing up my Secret Quonsar pressie.

3. Listening to Angel Haze and Danny Brown.
