Welcome to Windows 7 Who has two thumbs and just got a new laptop? This girl! It's my first Windows 7 machine. Anything I need to know and/or what do you do when you first get a new computer?
I got a Win7 laptop last year and I love it. For anti-virus and Firewall I just use the Windows own Microsoft Security Essentials and Firewall, which I'm finding less obtrusive than Avast or AVG.

I found the 'libraries' a bit hard to get used to at first, and I also didn't realise that, unlike my XP computer, the C Drive is the one running the programs and the D Drive is the partition for user accounts and storage (it's the opposite on my XP computer), and so I ended up almost filling up my C drive and having to move all my pics, .mobi files, etc. onto the D Drive.

At first I couldn't find out how to get back to the desktop, as there's no desktop icon in the left-hand corner, but it's a little rectangle on the right-hand side.

Overall I've not found Win 7 to be too different from XP.

Oh, one thing I do on a new computer is to copy Firefox and Thunderbird via Moz Backup onto a memory stick and install it on the new machine, so I have all my bookmarks, address book etc. on the new computer.

I use Windows 7 pretty much as it comes. I install Security Essentials and change a few settings but mostly it "just works". It took MS about 25 years to make a desktop OS that works right and I think that they've screwed it up with 8 but 7 is a pretty nice system.

Windows 7 laptop last year here, too. Search is wonderful - turns up what you're looking for in under a second. I don't know if you've found it or not; if you have multiple windows open, you can flip through them with 'Microsoft key + tab' in a little 3D presentation. Keep tapping tab and let go of the MS key when you get to the program you want. :)

I found the translucent title bars a bit dizzying but I think I adjusted those and/or got used to them

I always turn off the transparency.

I poked around with it for quite a while last night - installing updates, removing the bloatware that I could, and watching Rikki Tiki Tavi over our home network (for whatever reason, it would never play on our desktop). I love it.

And it's perfect timing - my annual BIG PROJECT at work is on track to be half finished in January instead of April or May, so I'm getting into it now. I'm looking forward to being able to work from home comfortably again.

I don't really operate with one set of bookmarks, but maybe now is a good time to start.

The only thing I've come across that's bizarre to me is that some windows, when maximized, extend below my taskbar. I'm sure I'll figure it out when it really starts to bug me.

Woo new laptop!

And I had forgotten how cute Rikki Tikki Tavi is in the Chuck Jones cartoon. Adorable!!
