I guess I should make an appearance in the thread.
As Senyar no doubt knows from other online venues, this was actually my worst birthday ever. I was stuck in Orlando on business, 1000 miles away from my family (and my bicycles), working late into the night in a hotel room. I escaped, but I'll have to return there next week.
I plan to eventually celebrate my birthday with a Pie Ride in which I will ride my bicycle 50 miles with some friends, a mile for each year on this earth, and end up eating pie at the end.
I have a few weeks (not exactly sure how long) of ridiculous (unpaid) overtime. Such it is with a salaried position. I'm actually working right now, from home, although I'm on a short break. It's a proposal for a contract worth many millions, and if I can succeed it will probably get me an outstanding rating (and good raise) again this year. Some people work frequent OT, but for my job which involves proposal work, it's more of a spot thing- when a major proposal comes along, life goes on hold for a while. It sucks, but then it'll get better.
I actually kind of like the work, it's just that sometimes it becomes overwhelming. And I'm apparently better at it than anyone else they can find. With the economy and things going on at my company, it's good to know you're in demand, even if it means some sacrifice once in a while. So it goes.
I just came out of a similar period at work. The difference being that we always have two busy (insane) times of year: when the school year starts and when it ends. There's a strange thrill to it, I guess because you're really pushing yourself and you see what you can produce under pressure. I like to think it keeps me in the game...
