Olympics [More:]Who's excited? I am. I'm watching the countdown to the opening ceremony, safely at home on TV - was in London earlier and am really glad I don't live there, as it was utter bedlam on the transport system, which wasn't helped by hearing the dulcet tones of Boris Johnson every ten minutes, asking me to plan my journey carefully. Senyar, is it going to affect you badly?

I'm surprised how proud I feel that the Olympics is being held here. Even though it's expensive, and the corporate sponsorship is a bit horrible, and everything... I think it's just really cool and I feel like a little kid getting excited about it.
We'll be watching the opening ceremonies when they air on tape delay here in NYC at 7:30! Can't wait!

I survived the '96 games in Atlanta (I lived in Chamblee at the time.) It might be a statement about how bad Atlanta's traffic normally is, but traffic during the Olympics was MUCH BETTER than usual. In the face of dire predictions of doom and catastrophe, companies let employees work flex hours or telecommute and everybody pretty much got where they were going.

Hopefully London will be able to do the same thing.

I'm pretty excited about it, as usual. I have opera tickets tonight, so I won't see our U.S. television coverage of the opening ceremony until after I get back; I may stay up VERY late watching the recording. (VCR! Old school!)

I am LOVING the opening ceremony. Someone on Twitter said something like "I thought Danny Boyle was going to show Britain to the world, but it looks like he's made it for us" and that's about right. You guys will probably get the edited highlights and I wonder how many of the really culturally specific bits (in-jokes, almost) stay in...

I'm still watching and loving every minute of it. I can't wait to see who lights the flame. I hope its Sir Roger Bannister.

The Olympic cauldron is stunning.

Very cool ceremonies. London rocks.

Those opening ceremonies far exceeded expectations. They did the nearly impossible - the elements of the show were witty, they were visually striking in a theatrical rather than utterly cheesy way, and they were pretty cool - not a quality that usually survives the fatuous management, politics, money and anxiety of something as big as the Olympics.

Oh Senyar, I was hoping for Roger Bannister as well. "The time is THREE . . . ."

Setting free the bears. || Couldn't have happened to a more deserving show
