Finally got to see Moonrise Kingdom last night. Loved it and I'm not really a big Wes Anderson fan. Seen any good movies lately? Or going to see any (in air-conditioned theaters) this weekend?[More:]It's pretty annoying that it took a month for Kingdom to show up in my local theater, we get all of the big crappy movies but we're lucky to get a week from most movies that I actually want to see.
My husband and I want to see that one too! But the nearest theater from my house is a five hour drive and pretty much gets only the big ones like yours does.

That's interesting to hear, octo - I've been underwhelmed at best with Wes Anderson flicks, maybe this one is salvageable?

Moonrise Kingdom isn't released here yet, and the need for air conditioning is not acute, so no. But I will go see it, when it is released - the trailer looked great.

(wondering where it's possible to live that's 5 hours' drive from a cinema, but then I live somewhere where five hours of driving means you fall off the edge)

Ha! If you're curious, my location is in my Metafilter profile. My town is so far north that its slogan is "Gateway to the South". Not originally from here but I can't imagine living here before the Web existed. At least it's possible now to "borrow" current movies from those nice folks over at the Internet!

Alto, even as an American living in the east I have a hard time imagining a place that's five hours from a movie theater. Five hours from here will can me to Columbus, Cincinnati, Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo, Philadelphia, Baltimore, DC, etc.

We saw Prometheus at Seattle's Cinerama, which is such a great theater it made up for what is frankly a meh movie. Apparently Ridley Scott forgot that a plot is supposed to hold together and make some sense.

Off to Avengers tonight as it is getting surprisingly good reviews. So is Moonrise Kingdom, so your recommendation puts it on our "To See" list.

Hmm, when I was in PGH I was able to see a doc (which had opened 2 weeks previously in NY) which was part of a arts festival.

We saw Moonrise Kingdom last month - it occasioned much debate, as I absolutely loved it and think it's Wes Anderson's best effort of all, while LT is still frustrated at Anderson's oddly detached style. But there was so much to love in that film that I just can't be swayed.

Other than that, we watched Exit Through the Gift Shop on DVD a couple weeks ago, and I found it a pretty amazing kind of tour de force and, for a while, a real mindfuck, though I think I've resolved all the ambiguity to my satisfaction. No matter what you think, it was supremely entertaining.

Miko I LOVED Exit Through the Gift Shop & all things Banksy. He is brilliant, in my opinion, to have created a persona through which he can enjoy the benefits & wealth of his work in anonymity while he's still alive. Pure genius!
