how to alphabetize pseudonyms? is it meaningful to split out the second word from a pseudonym that's not a surname?[More:]

I started using standard surname style splitting eg

Pharoahe Monch
Styles P
Prodigy
Earl Sweatshirt
Kanye West

but it's turning out a bit ridic cause Styles seems like he should be with the S's and not the Ps, Sweatshirt is not a surname, etc
Good question. The alphabetizing conundrum has been plaguing the pop music world since Jethro Tull and Uriah Heap (both group names) and Sonny & Cher broke up. I still refuse to look for Elvis Presley under E.

going to go with first letter for now.. barely any rappers use their real names anyway

I always alphabetise bands/artists strictly by the name they perform under. Excluding 'the' etc, of course.

So, Elvis Presley would be under 'E' after Electric Light Orchestra and Elvis Costello.

yeah

I mean on reflection it makes sense, I just got puzzled cause I was thinking of pseudonyms instead of artists in general

like if you look at itunes it does the same thing

so I just skipped 'a', 'the' and 'dj' type prefixes

You need the notion of titel and voorvoegsel (pron. forefoochsel)
So, for example, the surname Vanderbilt would be written 'van der Bilt' (de Bilt is a village) and alphatbetised 'Bilt, van der'.
dj could be treated like a title (mr. dr. baron etc)
So if a trust fund scion of the Vanderbilt family would issue the song Mo' Money it would be alphabetised:
Bilt, DJ van der - Mo' Money

It can get quite baroque by the way:
Vennegoor of Hesselink (of=or)
van Voorst tot Voorst (from ... until ...)
in 't Veld (in the Field)
uijt ten Boogaart (out of the Orchard)

Btw btw: Dirk Bogarde was born Derek van den Bogaerde.

iTunes took a strong stand on this and I've come to accept that it has utility. First letter, first word in name is your guide to alphabetization. This upends the usual Western citation system but gets you around just about all idiosyncrasies of naming.

Back in the '70s I started alphabetizing my LPs. I keep the same system for folders on my computer. I cannot change now.

Actual name, or name like: Filed under surname, so Alice Cooper and Elvis Costello under C.
Others like Black Sabbath filed under B. The is dropped so The Beatles are under B.
Tribute albums go under the name of the original artist. But other compilation albums mess me up.

Here's an example, how I would alphabetize the artists on a recent mix I made*:

2Mex
Artifacts
AZ
Big Boi
Big Pun
Binary Star
Black Sheep
Bone Thugs N' Harmony
Bonney, Tabi
Common
Cormega
Dead Prez
De La Soul
Del tha Funky Homosapien
DMX
Doom, MF since he often just goes by Doom
Eric B & Rakim
Fashawn
Fu-Schnickens
Gang Starr
Group Home
Heltah Skeltah
Ice Cube
Ill Bill
Johnson, Linton Kwesi
Junclassic
Jungle Brothers
KiD CuDi
Kweli, Talib
Large Professor
Masta Ace
Mega Ran
Monch, Pharaohe because, spelling notwithstanding, it's an honorific. This is the trickiest on my list and could go either way
Murs
Nas
Notorious B.I.G., The
Ortiz, Joell
Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth gave me pause, but It's more like a band name than a bibliographic entry
Price, Sean
Raekwon
Rap, Kool G is a quirky personal choice, this could easily go under K
Sadat X
MC Serch files under "S" but with the MC up front, that's my style
Slick Rick
Spyder D
Styles P
Super Chron Flight Brothers
Tim Dog tempts me to file under "Dog, Tim" but nobody would look for that
Wrecks In Effects
Y Society
Zion I

I tend to put names beginning with numbers first (the 2Mex is just on there for demonstration purposes, they didn't make the cut) but I would be likely to put 2Pac under "Shakur, Tupac" because all 2Pac's work was by Mr. Shakur but not all of his work was released under the 2Pac brand.

*If anyone wants it, hit me up, I can point you to a .zip of the mix. Burns to 3 CDs. Some lyrical content offensive, but it's all about rhymes, flow, and invention. I enjoy it.

I approve the alphabetisation your list with one exception - names starting with numbers should be filed based on the spelling of the number as a word.

That's crazy talk! First, James Earl Jones said "1... 2... 3... 4... 5..." and then he said "A... B... C... D... E...!"

At least that's the way it was on my TV.
