Too many wonderful people dying right now. R.I.P. Maurice Sendak, author of "Where The Wild Things Are," among many many others.
He also did the instructions for Little Bear. I love Little Bear!

Try and get to see the wonderful documentary "Tell Them Anything You Want."

He left behind such a gift. I love Little Bear, too!

What makes these passings, Sendak and MCA, feel strange is they represent pop icons that are distinctly next-generation for me. The Beastie Boys with "Fight For Your Right" were the first band whom I recognized as not-from-my-time, and "Where The Wild Things Are" is this fuzzy island from sometime between Scooby Doo and Barney.

An illustrated conversation between Maurice Sendak and Art Spiegelman, as drawn by Spiegelman.

My mother loved Sendak way more than I did, although I didn't mind him too much. ("Don't you want to read WTWTA tonight?") I did enjoy the Nutshell Library and In the Night Kitchen; at some point I drew circumcision lines on all the penises with a black felt-tip pen.

Liked Richard Scarry a whole lot better though.
