Summer Vacation Plans! Some started to discuss it in the book thread, so let's spinoff, shall we?[More:]Whatcha doing this summer? Me, I'm having a baby, that's my "vacation". My boss referred to my maternity leave as "vacation" once, and I gave him a hard time about that, so now that's the joke 'round the office. We're taking a weekend in the Catskills next weekend; will be nice to get out of the city and breathe the fresh air.
Congrats again, TPS. I'll be going on a Caribbean cruise with the wife. I will need it because when we return we will be selling our house and moving to Florida with my mom. To be close to my brother and his family. I live in interesting times to paraphrase the old Chinese curse.

We have a week in Vermont again, at the most wonderful place in the world. I can't wait and am counting down the days until June 9. Apart from that, we are planning a few weekends visiting friends either in the Hamptons or in Connecticut. These friends have pools :)

God help me, but I kind of want to go to Delaware.

I grew up there, until I was ten, and when I took my ex there the whole thing was fraught with bad emotions and a lot of crankiness. I couldn't even drive the rental car because I was under 25. That was 2004, and I haven't been back since. Now that I'm in a much happier place, I would like to show my husband where I grew up, as well as see some family in the DC area and maybe poke around Philly, etc.

Also, I think it would be HILARIOUS to buy something legally at the liquor store down the street, which I once considered the most glamorous place ever. ("A visit to our wine cellar is like a trip around the world!")

Hanging on for dear life for summer. I am battered and bruised from work and school demands from January - mid-May. So, hoping for a few days on Martha's Vineyard the second weekend in June, maybe staying til Tuesday; there's a nice little place I stay there which is super low-fi, old-fashioned and simple. There's a cedar-lined outdoor shower, a soft bed with a chenille spread, and total silence at night, the only sound the bell bouys far off in the harbor. Oh yes.

Two weeks after that, camping in Acadia with a couple of our newer friends. I've been camping there once and visited the town once, and am looking forward to the good life there again, before the crowds, biking on the carriage roads and roasting mussels over a fire.

My lackadaisical Gen-X high school class has called a super-informal 25th reunion at the bar where I used to work on the Jersey Shore in July. Totally heading down for that. Will visit with my folks and sleep on the beach on the surrounding days.

Finally, OCean City NJ the last week in August for our annual shore week with family.

So, all fairly local/domestic adventures. IN addition to these trips I just hope to keep up with my community garden, ride the new bike I hope to have soon, and get as many beach days and beach evenings as possible. I really need to downshift or I'm going to get an ulcer or something. So I'm planning to try to put a little "summer vacation" into every week.

I have to go back to Chicago for the TGT shareholders' meeting. Debating whether to go to MO or MI after that. New England in August.

My plans aren't too thrilling this year: camping with my homie at a 4 day hippie music festival near Lake Ontario over Memorial Day and then camping again at Fires of Venus in Darlington in August.

Like Miko, I'm battered and bruised from work and school demands, with no real break from Christmas until late June (we teach a quarter system). So holding in there, until we're past all the student competitions, awards, and graduation ceremonies that make working at a University so much fun. Then I have to rush off to a conference, to *try* to reinvigorate my social network to the point where I might get my work published (I'm an introvert, so not my favorite part of the job).

August should be good. My second nephew is getting married on an Aegean (Greek) island, so lots of sun, greek salads, ouzo, and late-night reminiscences for a week or so. Whitewashed walls, blue-painted doors, wine-dark sea, and the sound of donkey meeehahs drifting on the breeze while you laze under a wooden pergola. Preceded by a week in the UK, to catch up on what they've been doing to the country, in my absence.

The previous nephew also held his wedding in Greece, so I am hoping that the third will follow suit in a year or two. It makes a nice vacation from the US ... :-)

Miko: Someone else mentioned Acadia recently. I suppose I'll have to keep it in mind!

I'll be in NH for a brief weekend next month (though it won't be summer yet), possibly VT later in the summer. Pretty much overnights, though; I don't really consider long weekends vacation (esp. not when most of the time is spent traveling).

I hope to be able to fit in an actual trip or two at some point, and a friend has expressed interest in my plan to hike to the source of the Hudson River (and then follow it back to NYC). Though that again will probably just be a weekend excursion.

I hope to have people visit, though. My couch is soooo comfy.

I'm going to Ohio in June for a wedding, but I'll also be there for the Washboard Festival, and I'm hoping to get to see Falling Water (the FLW masterpiece) too. A couple of days after I get back from the States I head off to Paris on the Eurostar for a short break.

Then comes the (dreaded) Olympics, which will make London mostly unbearable for the rest of the summer. Can't say I'm looking forward to that at all.
