Wasn't This on a Portlandia Episode? If it wasn't, it should have been.
I thought the basic idea behind locavoring was to reduce the carbon footprint. Retiring these birds rather than eating them seems to defeat the purpose. Sure, "they eat pests", but not that many.

In season 1 they went to a chicken farm to ensure that the chicken dish they were about to order contained properly raised chickens. I don't have cable, but it would be hilarious if this came up in season 2.

This stuff writes itself!!

Their stunning, multilevel chicken coop was featured in the 2011 Tour de Coops in Portland.

Portland has a tour of what? I want to go on this!

as well as clients with appetites for silkies, a breed of chicken that looks oddly like a primate

Oh New York Times, of course they do. (Completely bizarre comparison-Do they have prehensile tails? Opposable thumbs? Binocular vision? Hair??)

Yeah, that comment about Silkies looking like primates is bizarre. And I'd love to go on a tour of chicken coops, too.

We have a Tour de Cluck in Davis. Complete with a great music video in which the mayor doing a chicken dance at the end.
