Lacey We put Lacey down last night. [More:] She had gotten to where she could not get up, even with help, and was not eating or drinking. It was time. But even close to the end, I kept thinking that if I could get one more Rimadyl in her, that would bring her back.

It has also been a very hard winter, with cleaning up after her incontinence, having to coax her up the stairs, which were excruciating for her to climb (although she refused to ever use the ramp we had there).

The vet came after she'd had a very hard day and she was wonderful, and Lacey went very quickly and easily.

Someone is coming by to pick her up at 10 this morning, then we will get her ashes back and spread them in this wooded area where she used to run.

Previously.
Oh Dan, I am so sorry. I know you and your wife have been through a lot with Lacey recently. What a hard decision. I hope that her passing, albeit difficult, brings you some measure of peace.

Very sorry, Dan. I know you know that it was time, and the right thing, but it's still so hard, isn't it?

Oh, I'm so sorry, danf. It's never easy, even when you've done everything you can to give her comfort and peace. The wooded area sounds lovely, and how comforting for you to have a way of saying goodbye to her.

So sad she had to go but it sounds like she had a great life.

Lacey knew how much you loved her and she loved you just as much: you shared a very important bond of love, and that makes this so terribly hard.

Wishing you and your family peace.

At home now. The cremation guy just came and got her. We are opting for a "private" cremation, and will spread her ashes in several places around. Coldchef himself could not have outcompassioned this guy. He was at his funereal best, with his quiet, patient demeanor.

Thank you for all of your kind thoughts. She was the Mother Teresa of dogs, and we told her before the end that she was a much better dog than we were dog owners, although we tried our best.

I'm so sorry about Lacey. She really did sound like a wonderful dog and she enriched all of your lives.
From my own experience, I know how heartbreaking this is and how difficult. You know when the time comes and life is too hard for them to take. You have to do what you can for your beloved companion, even thought this is the last thing you want to do. But at least you made it as easy as you could possibly make it and her passing was a good one. You have all of the great memories and she will always be a part of your life and family ...

I like to think that our old dog is still hanging around in spirit. He keeps our current brace of collies in check when they get too boisterous (which is why they sit and stare into an empty corner for hours) and watches over us as we sleep. We'll meet at the rainbow bridge.

I don't know what to say. I'm weeping for you all. RIP Lacey.

Thank you all of you for your expressed, or simply held, thoughts. They mean a lot.

I took the rest of the day off yesterday and Vicki and I undogified the house. I still have 30 or so pounds of dog food to give away.

The house seems empty, but at least no messy poops to clean up (and off her), and no barking at random times in the night to get out. And we'll go to the coast on Saturday, for a good long time, and not have to worry about getting back.

Of course, one of the cats barfed on our good, previously tarped carpet this morning, as if to say, "not so fast, buster."
