Anything you can recommend for a total newb? What is representative? What pushes the envelope?

I'd say you should just start sampling mixes. I listened to Soul Bros Records Podcast 05, and it was neat to hear a sampling from a single label, but the DJ talked about each track, which broke up the experience as something for background enjoyment. Right now I'm listening to ZEPH4R's Water AKA Liquid Funk mix, which is pretty short (about 30 minutes), but is really smooth so far.
