Paulo Coelho - Love him, hate him, or indifferent?
I know absolutely nothing about this author, but I have access to some of his books.

He's a self-help writer who benefits from translation; is the general criticism leveled at him here in Brazil. I've only ever read one of his books (Veronika decide morrer - Veronika decides to die?), and it was pretty bad.

I'm indifferent but The Alchemist did inspire a friend of mine to leave Africa for an education in the U.S. and totally change the coarse of her life.

I know nothing about him, except that a friend with good taste referred to The Alchemist as "the worst book [he's] ever read."

I tried to get a fix on this author from Amazon reviews, but with all the grammar and spelling mistakes I find there now, I cannot trust those ratings.

He writes a lot of books, none of which I've ever read but all of which I've shelved. I casually knew a guy in high school with the same last name, his dad was a Portugese baker.

I too had a friend who said his life changed after reading The Alchemist. I read it and it was just okay. I did like another one of his books, which I can't remember the title of, and the same friend hated it.
