Apparently teaching respect for other cultures amounts to "racial hatred" and is in violation of Arizona's statewide ban against ethnic studies.
This is one of those cases where the conservatives and the liberals both have distorted the issue beyond any semblance of reality.

Ardiril has it. Read the text of the law (PDF) if you want to see what it really says. It starts out swinging:

A. A SCHOOL DISTRICT OR CHARTER SCHOOL IN THIS STATE SHALL NOT INCLUDE IN ITS PROGRAM OF INSTRUCTION ANY COURSES OR CLASSES THAT INCLUDE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:

__ 1. PROMOTE THE OVERTHROW OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT.
__ 2. PROMOTE RESENTMENT TOWARD A RACE OR CLASS OF PEOPLE.
__ 3. ARE DESIGNED PRIMARILY FOR PUPILS OF A PARTICULAR ETHNIC GROUP.
__ 4. ADVOCATE ETHNIC SOLIDARITY INSTEAD OF THE TREATMENT OF PUPILS AS INDIVIDUALS.

I like that the first point is even included in the list. I wonder which classes and/or books they were targeting there?

I wonder, too. It seems like everything I hear about AZ is a bit horrifying.

I think most of that is just media hype trying to get ratings up for their news.

I may have been mixing it up with New Mexico as far as dire news, probably because I relate stories of that kind of heat as dire.

There really needs to be more promotion of the overthrow of governments. I mean really, look who's talking.

Ah, more info.

I really have no idea what media hype you're referring to.

I for one applaud all the measures diligent legislators take to prevent America from falling to a jihadi gay uppity reconquista.

It's about time someone defined the line between A) a healthy interest in and respect for your ethnic culture, ancestry, and traditions, and B) a racial supremacist attitude. I've seen people in an anally-retentive PC environment cause a huge fuss making an issue of twisting A into B in others while practicing A themselves and... nevermind. Obviously you can be proud of who you are without thinking you're better than anyone else.
