Winter wear Fuzzy hats with ear flaps, arm warmers, leg warmers-- I feel the need to prepare. Shopping tips? I'm somewhat astounded on what one can find. Isn't long underwear just way too warm once you are inside?
One of my favourite winter warmers is my Magic Scarf which I bought last year from a discount store - mine is black. It's SO warm when worn as a cowl or a hood and if wearing it like that gets too hot, I can take it off and wear it as a normal scarf, or it's so small it'll fit into my pocket or bag with no problem.

Where are you going?

I live in Maine. I layer. light thermal tee, then cotton sweater, fleece vest, pretty light wool scarf, warm socks, wool or corduroy pants. Or maybe a cotton turtleneck and a wool sweater, plus the thicker fleece vest. Did I mention warm socks? Fleece hat(wool itches my forehead), lined gloves, either the lined leather jacket or the warmer knee length coat. Maybe a muffler. I have several shawl/scarves, and use them as a shawl or lap blanket when it's cold at work. I own a lot of fleece. It comes in different weights, it works if it gets wet(wool, too, but cotton is useless when wet, though feels good next to the skin).

When I go out to shovel, I usually wear a wool sweater and fleece vest; activity keeps you warm. Wind steals your warmth very fast; a windbreaker/anorak is a good thing to have. A thermos of hot beverage is also good.

LLBean. They always list the comfort range on cold weather clothing. Silk long underwear is light and warm; wish I had some. The guarantee is serious and shipping is free. Landsend is okay, too, but LLBean is just up the road, so for me, it's local shopping.

Only had to wear the winter coat a few days this year. It's been a very warm wet winter.

I like silk long underwear. It is warm when needed but breathes so I never feel overheated. And I am a huge fan of warm coats by Helly Hansen, many of which have removable liners. And for driving or urban settings, I find the warmest gloves are leather with cashmere lining.
