An update on our cat Guinness (with pics!) [More:] So Guinness had his shattered leg amputated yesterday (initial thread about the accident), and IMMEDIATELY started feeling better without the mangled foot. We saw him on Sunday, when we took him from the local vet to the big animal hospital, and he was SO MISERABLE that day. Even on pain meds, he was just in pitiful shape.

Today, when he saw us, he went into "insane purr" mode and stayed that way the whole 45 minutes we were with him. (Photos) His other foot got scraped up too, and they want to keep him again tonight so they can swap out that bandage tomorrow before sending him home. He ate last night for the first time since the accident, and he stood up (briefly and unsteadily) a couple of times while we were visiting with him. Once that slippery bootie/bandage is off his foot, I think he'll be able to start getting around a little bit. Towards the end he dropped off to sleep and had a ten-minute cat nap while we were still stroking and scritching him- he looked so comfortable. :)

We both feel 100% after seeing him today- he looked like his old self (Well, MOST of his old self... heh) and he should be able to come home tomorrow. So, yay! Thank you everyone for all the kind words here, on Twitter and in email. The encouragement has been a real boon.
oh gosh that is great! so glad Guinness (and you!) are feeling better.

Hey, yay indeed! Great news.

Yay!

Can't keep a good cat down.

You realize, of course, that his limited mobility will require the immediate construction and implementation of fanciful and elaborate cat ladders throughout your house.

(Arn needs a new project, right?)

I'm with BOP, new elaborate feline contraptions are to be constructed forthwith! I am so happy to hear that kitty is better. They can bounce back so quickly. I'm so glad you guys are feeling better about his recovery.

Great news.

I'm bummed about his brush with injury, but glad to see he's doing better. I didn't get to know him well when I was visiting, but he looks a lot like my boy Hugo, so I am fond of him. Get well, Guinness!

Excellent news.

Our dog had an ACL tear that required pretty severe surgery, then a cast for quite awhile. We have pics of the cast coming off -- sad dog with big bandaged leg, then smiling happy dog with bare hairless scarred leg.

Animals are so much smarter than we are -- they seem to know that if the pain stops and any mobility is restored, life is good.

Really glad Guinness has such caring people and that your vets did such a great job.

I've just done a catchup skim of everal weeks' worth of posts, and read the first Guinness thread about twenty minutes ago. I'm so glad he's doing better and that he has you guys looking after him. He looks like a great cat.

Yay for Guinness! I'm so glad you all gave him another chance at life.

Just in case your vet didn't mention it (or it got glossed over in the chaos and worry, as happens quite often), be sure to keep an eye on his weight. Moving a cat from outdoor to indoor in addition to losing some mobility is a recipe for ballooning up, and he doesn't need the extra weight on his other hind hip/leg. Unfortunately, this is a lot easier to maintain with dogs than cats, but keeping it off is *so* much easier than trying to pull it off.

Y'all are awesome. Hope you all have some of his namesake around to celebrate his homecoming tomorrow.

Thanks, everyone- it'll be so good to have everybody back under one roof tomorrow.

Thanks for the tip, ufez- G has always been pretty slim before, but yeah, he's gonna be a bit more sedentary in the future, I think.

BOP & msali- I'll ask Arn to start designing the double-helical multi-platformed cat-climbing fantasia in our living room that will keep everyone busy and exercised. :)

Oh, goodie.
Now you are expected to document every moment of his recovery for our benefit, because you couldn't possibly have anything else going on.
Heh.
Make him comfy and chill out, the lot of you!
Phew!
I say this out of love and a day filled with beer, holiday cards, cat lap, and DRAMA!
It's like backstage at a drag show here.
If only we could all smoke a joint and relax.
