I like Lucinda William's lyrics, though she's not super-current.

I also like Brian Webb and Josh Ritter for folk lyrics, though I haven't heard either of them in a while.

Cake is also pretty clever.

This comment may just stand as proof that I have not listened to current music in quite a while.

I also think Soltero has ridiculously smart and clever and lots-of-levels music, but (a) I have not heard of anyone outside of Boston who's ever heard of him/them and (b) again I have not listened to their new stuff in years.
