There are a bunch of movies that I want to see this season. Saw Hugo yesterday and loved it. Who'd have thought that Scorsese could do a kid's movie so well? [More:]

Other ones that I'm hoping to see:

* The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Haven't seen the original but the book was a great read and it's Fincher so at least it'll look great.

* Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - Loved the book and the original series and Gary Oldman is perfect as Smiley. Not sure how they can condense the story into two hours though.

* Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - Dumb fun but fun.

* Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol - Not a fan of this franchise or Tom Cruse but it's Brad Bird's (Ratatouille, Incredibles) first live action.

* The Adventures of Tintin - I've only read one or two of the comics but liked the trailer, looked very Indiana Jones-ish (in a good way).

I'm really stoked for the Tintin movie. My elementary school library had a pretty good selection of the books that I was obsessed with back in the day. As much as I don't really care for 3-D movies, if I'm going to see one, I'd rather it be animated and done with intent and I've heard some pretty strong reviews. Can't wait for it.

I'm glad to hear that you liked Hugo. I was thinking about seeing that.

I'm kinda reluctant to see Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I recently watched the Swedish movies of the books on HBO and really liked them, so I'm kinda worried how the movies will be once they have been toned down for an American audience

I'm looking forward to seeing the J Edgar Hoover movie.

"Hugo" was fantastic. The 3D wasn't as vital as it was in "Avatar", and in fact, was a bit distracting at times. 2D is perfectly suitable.

And while I'm slagging it, do we really need 3D re-releases of "Star Wars", "Beauty and the Beast", "Titanic", and a slew of other films where 3D is an afterthought?

I wanted to see The Way, but I fear I may have missed my chance to see it in a theater.

Oooh, no I didn't miss my chance! Excellent.

I thought that the 3D in Hugo was really effective, more so than in any movie that I've seen since Avatar. I loved the floating dust motes and snowflakes and the dog's nose sticking out into the audience. I usually won't go to a 3D movie but I'd read about how Scorcese and his cinematographer were really trying to push the technology so I wanted to see what they'd done with it.

As for the 3D retools of "classics", I'll skip those. The 3D in the Titanic trailer before Hugo looked really cardboard standup-like.

Thanks for the ratings on Hugo. I want to see it, but I wasn't sure if I'd just wait to see it at home. Since you say the 3D is effective I'll take my chances and see it in the theatre.

Btw if you're a Tintin fan since childhood you may want to look into reviews before deciding you want to see it.
On the basis of the devastating review in the Guardian I decided I prefered to keep my childhood image of Tintin intact and forgo Spielbergs movie.

Did you see that Martin Scorsee was in the movie for one second? Hugo is a great tribute to cinema. It rates with Cinema Paradiso. The 3 d effect is better than the technique in Avatar.
