R.I.P. Alan Sues, better known as "Uncle Al, the kiddies' pal!" from Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. He was a funny guy, whether hawking peanut butter or reminiscing about an audition gone wrong. Bonus: Alan Sues and Ringo Starr (recently of the December Musical Giftstravaganza) hold hands on national TV.
I remember Alan because when I saw him as Uncle Al I was very young and still had memories of the local TV show Uncle Al's Kid's Club. Uncle Al was later my boss at the TV station.

Also, the first time I saw Will Ferrell and the first time I saw Perez Hilton I thought "is that that guy from Laugh-In?

Also, also, lately, I find it weird that people I think are very old are kicking the bucket and they are younger than my in-laws.

RIP Alan.

And it's sad that all those queer dudes of the 60s (ie. Alan, Charles Nelson Reilly,Paul Lynde, etc.) are very much history now. I wasn't one of them but I was always an outsider and they seemed to be more real to me than most folks on TV.

The great show biz blogger Mark Evanier has a great story about one of Alan's last public appearances.

I loved Alan's whacky characterizations. I know I got my eyeroll and exasperated sigh from him.

I just loved him on Laugh In. So sad.

I was just thinking about writing something up about this for MF since I saw a link to it from JoeMyGod. Reading the comments on that obit thread was really interesting for me, someone who doesn't know much about that scene at all.

If you do, jessamyn, be sure to include oneswellfoop's link. It's priceless.
