December Musical Giftstravaganza! I almost missed my day, sorry![More:]The girls were at a skating competition a couple hours from home today, so I spent 4-5 hours on the highway, and blah blah blah, I almost missed my commitment!

But, here it is...I may have shared this song in the past, but I shall share it again.

My best friend, who passed away 3 years ago now, found this band on usenet. OLD usenet, I tell you. Somehow he stumbled on some MP3s and loved the ridiculous name...and downloaded some stuff.

Ashtray Babyhead became our favourite band for a little while, despite us not being able to find any merch to buy, never seeing them live, or ever being able to buy a proper CD (this was a fair ways back and not very many unsigned bands sold CDs online).

One December, Neville emailed me excitedly. He'd found CHRISTMAS music by these guys. It was lo-fi as hell, and there wasn't much of it, but we loved it.

This song has remained one of my favourites, and serves as a fond remembrance for me now, not just of a band that came and went, but also of the greatest friend I've ever had, who also, sadly for me, came and went.

I give you, Ashtray Babyhead, singing, Winter Wonderland.
Great band name. Cool song.

I like the story and the song. I've never heard them do this - very fun. I first heard Ashtray Babyhead from a mixswap disc (I think it was pre MeFi swaps, probably from a powerpop list I used to be part of) and I literally played the song from the mix 6 or 7 times in a row, and then over the next few weeks played it a few dozen more times. All of these years later it's still a big fave. This is the song - "Mir".

Thanks for reminding me about them. I just pulled the CD out to rip to my MP3 player.
