There must be a thought balloon over that cat's head containing either:

"We can't stop here! This is bat country!"

or

"Jesus Christ! It's a lion! Get in the car!"

Otherwise, it would not belong on the internet.

I've never had a cat that could cope with car travel. The poor things just freak out.

octothorpe, my family had a cat a couple decades ago that loved car rides. She'd curl up in the window on the dashboard above the driver's instrument gauges and just sleep her way through cross-country drives, waking up enough to demand scritches, pats, and laptime before hopping back up into the window to fall asleep.

When I was a kid we used the cardboard pet boxes because we couldn't afford the fancy schmancy plastic/metal boxes. Foxy (he had HUGE ears) would shred them in about two minutes and once he got out of the box he was okay with the trip. After a couple shredded boxes we just went with the flow and let him ride loose in the car.

That's definitely a scared face, and the open mouth is the cat's way of (a) getting extra oxygen because his heart is racing with panic and (b) tasting all the new odours around him.
