This sort of restores my faith that rich human communication is not going the way of the dinosaur. With a couple of exceptions, the words on this list are worth looking up.
It would be interesting if there was a way to link a word's appearance on the list to its use in an article or blog post. I have to say the list does not at all reflect the words I have to look either for meaning or spelling; those are sadly mundane.
I looked up benefice, bubkes, didactic, and portmanteau. AFAIK, I've never seen benefice or bubkes, have seen both didactic and portmanteau a million zillion times but never had looked them up, or if I did look them up the definitions didn't stick.
... and having read their definition of benefice, I'm still not quite sure what the hell they're trying to tell me --
1: an ecclesiastical office to which the revenue from an endowment is attached
2: a feudal estate in lands
seems to me that their definition of benefice is bubkes all the way
These lists strike me more as spelling look-ups than for definitions.
Definitely, for a lot. In fact, I used it as a spelling lookup today for (sec, have to look it up again):
Bouilabaise
That's odd since I was sure I copied it off the page. Doh, I probably copied what I typed in.
There are a couple variations.
