This is cool. That story is really heartbreaking, of course, but I'm very glad if anything positive can come out of it. And, it sounds like, to some extent at least, it HAS, for Quinto.
I'm always conflicted about these sorts of reports. It's a damn shame anyone cares what another's sexuality is (unless you are considering said person as a potential partner). It's especially a damn shame anyone cares about a celebrity's sexuality, but then people notice if Kim Kardashian wears the same dress as someone else. I also question if Quinto being gay comes as a surprise to many people. Lastly, having celebrities running around dedicating songs to you and coming out in your honor serves to incentivize suicides in my mind. A singular gay teen probably feels like he can't make much of an impact, but a Lady Gaga dedication sure can.
It would be nice if we were in a world were people like Quinto or Rodemeyer never felt a need to hide who they are. We're not in that world, so this complicates all of the above.
It's too bad it took such a negative event to make Quinto realize there was a value in his identifying with a marginalized group. I would have admired him more if he had come to this realization without the death of another.
Eek, that's a scary point, cjorgensen - the incentivization (think I might have just made up a word?) of suicide. Gah.
Yes, I too wish it were less noteworthy. But...I think that announcements like Quinto's might be a (tiny, tiny) step toward broader acceptance and the eventual arrival at the point where sexuality IS NOT noteworthy. One can hope, anyway.
I'd like to think that every celebrity and person of note who comes forward shifts the perception of homosexuality from "different" to "normal," but there's still so much stupid bullying going on. There are still people who won't stand up to bullying when they see it, or at least call out name calling and casual homophobia. The Don't Say Gay bill passed in Tennessee earlier this year.
It caused this to happen which I like not cause of the gay thing but cause that 3am news show is like my favorite thing in the world, just THROW! THROW THE INTERNS AT THE CAMERA! NO ONE IS WATCHING! Everyone has no makeup and there is paper everywhere.
