Advice for selling on Craigslist If you've sold things (especially big-ticket items) via Craigslist before, I'd like to hear your positive stories.[More:] I wanna do the whole sell-my-phone-to-upgrade-to-the-newer-model thing and, while I used to sell things on eBay a lot, I haven't been there since 2006 and I'm wary that it's been all-but-deserted and overrun with scammers. While selling on CL seems more scam-resistant to me in terms of only accepting cash, I'm scared to meet them. Ideally I'd meet them at the AT&T store and have them give me money for the new phone and I'd hand over my old one. Would it be acceptable to carry a counterfeit-detecting pen?

I thought about sending it to the electronics trade-in program at Amazon which is currently offering me slightly more than what I'd be asking. But they'd pay me in store credit and I'm not sure it would be in the form of a gift card which I could then sell for cash. And I worry about the feasibility of that.
I've always thought the opposite -- eBay was more secure and CL less so. It could depend on location. I infrequently sell and buy stuff on eBay and haven't had any issues. One friend sold her old iPhone on it recently -- it took two tries (since the first guy was an idiot) but she didn't have any trouble otherwise. I think requiring Paypal and not letting anyone talk you into taking the sale off site are good practices to follow.

I sold my old iPhone on eBay and there was no issues. You basically get the same sort of protections from PayPal as you would with a credit card company.

I also have sold a bunch of stuff via CraigsList (with s few individual items sold for hundreds of dollars) and I pretty much had no issues. Plenty of people are willing to meet you wherever you want to complete the transaction. Personally I wouldn't be that worried about it, especially as an old phone can't possibly really be a big ticket item. I wouldn't worry about counterfeit money etc. Pretty much the main scam you see is people offering something besides cash, if you email them back stating cash only you usually don't hear back from them.
