This music video by the band Five Finger Death Punch shows how hard it is to parody music video conventions in 2011. (It's also possibly NSFW due to some music-video booty-shakin'.)[More:] They lack the nerve and imagination to REALLY parody music videos the way Aphex Twin (and director Chris Cunningham) did in 1999 with Windowlicker. (If you want to skip the long, foul, and hilarious intro, you can see the music part of Windowlicker here.)

Mind you, I LOVE music videos, but I think a takedown of the more ridiculous aspects of the form every now and then is a really healthy thing.
Actually, that video was a pleasant surprise to me. I had never listened to Five Finger Death Punch before, assuming from the name that it was another repetitive Thrash Metal bore, which it seemed at the beginning when the vocalist did the stereotypical grunt/screech. (Do ALL of those bands have the same singer? Because it's all the same voice.) But as I hung in there to check out the video portion I noticed a little more musicality than the thrash, and then it completely changed for the refrain, the vocalist turned into an actual singer, and what I heard was a crazy mash-up of Thrash, Vintage Punk and Grunge with touches of actual Melodic Hard Rock. Whoa. I mean, the singer changes vocal styles more often than he changes his underwear (boxers to briefs to Spongebob shorts?), and the whole band is showing off an interesting variety of chops. Yes, the video wasn't much to write home about, but I checked out some of their other YouTubes and caught a pattern that looked like they were trying to do a more subtle parody of the usual over-the-top-ness. The song which had their longest stretches of continuous RAAAAAAGE, "The Way of the Fist", intercut quick scenes of wrestlers, which to me is an unsubtle hint that they don't WANT to be taken seriously.

Then I stumbled onto their cover of "Bad Company", which, musically, I PREFER TO THE ORIGINAL (although the band that made that eponymous hit never impressed me) and the video made my jaw drop. It documented the band on a FREAKING USO TOUR, performing for real soldiers in between acting like fake soldiers in transport planes and on shooting ranges. That was by far their best video and absolute proof that Five Finger Death Punch is having WAY too much fun and are somewhat fun to listen to. I will investigate the music further - the videos not so much.

osf: Based on this review, I am definitely checking this out on my phone on my lunch.

(Because the computer I'm on at the office is running Win2000 and IE6, that's why.)
